I am the CEO of a domain company. Every day we suggest, analyze, score million domain names. We see trends and hot terms.
Do you know how many domains do I own? One. Insights.io.
I have never been hot for parking and buying/selling domains. It is a legitimate business and I have many friends who are very successful at it. I just couldn't find any satisfaction in domain investment (apart from helping people succeed in it :P).
In 2012 I was attending the Data 2.0 conference in San Francisco and I was struck by the importance of the world "insight". I had no hope to find any relevant gTld available so I looked for ccTlds instead and there it was, insights.io. More than $100/yr for the privilege of owning a hip tld (for geeks) that could mean something for me (insights in and out... my life). I simply LOVED this domain. I still do.
The love for this domain is one of the reason I keep getting back posting stuff and occasionally hit a subject of moderate interest for someone else. We could say that this minimal contribution to the web started with the love for a domain that was available and affordable.
Someone said they could not see how the new gTld program would increase global happiness. I do.
