The First LED Dome Screen Planetarium In The World!

The Konica Minolta Planetarium opened in Nagoya, Japan, on October 27, 2021.

The planetarium is the world's first 8K LED dome planetarium built in Nagoya by RSA Cosmos in collaboration with Konica Minolta of Japan. It consists of LED dome system and SkyExplorer (Media Globe ∑ SE in Japan) astronomical software system.

The Konica Minolta Planetarium in Nagoya can accommodate 170 spectators at a time. The original film Sirius: Gazing Up at the Winter Constellations with You has been screened as the planetarium's first event, with singer Kunikaki Suda singing the film's theme song, "Late Night."

Traditional digital planetariums project images from projectors onto a dome screen, which is rendered by illuminating the metal curtain inside the dome screen and receiving the reflected light. Because the image itself is displayed by diffuse reflection in the dome screen, local distortion will occur, and multiple projectors must be used for image fusion, but it still cannot provide a perfect image with high contrast.

Dome LED screen do not require a projected light or image and produce a uniform image by using self-emitting LED components.
