Day 5: Supportive always-together Buddies

This year I’m committed to seeking out more mentors that will guide me on my path to becoming an architect and project manager.

Exploring outside of my immediate field in architecture really open my mind into different fields I could go with my degree in architecture. I hope that this year I can find opportunities that will help me brach out and learn different things. Also this year and in the future I want to speak out about what I want in the future, like project management. I think this will help me find the right mentors that are willing to show me the ropes, and hopefully they will see my enthusiasm from the beginning.

Day 4: An Energetic Mentor

The most important quality and skill that a mentor should have is being able to listen to the mentee with any problems or any hopes that they may have and be able to have the time to be able to guide them towards the path that they want to take. In turn a mentee, should be able to listen to the mentor and be able to accept constructive criticism. Also be able to tell your mentor the path that you see for yourself.

At DCAMM we learn that the way that the departments are set up you always have some to report back to. That person is your point of contact and they have way that they communicate. For example, they have biweekly meetings where theres talk about the projects but also about career development and how they can be on a way they can land that role that they hope for in the future.

Brenna was our point of contact in DCAMM and she was always in every step. She listen to our needs, answered any questions we had and also asks us for any feedback that we may have for future externships. We really appreciated her in this journey.

Day 3: Medical Clients

The Shattuck Hospital is a Relocation Project where Shattuck’s existing medical and psychiatric services change to the East Newton Pavilion building, an old Boston Medical Center.

The clients are the Department of Public Health (DPH), the Department of Mental Health (DMH) and the Department of Correction (DOC).

Because they serve these departments the design was affected by having to abide by many anti-ligature procedures required by codes, in so they had to find ways so that patients don't hurt themselves. Ultimately DCAMM objectives change for security and safety reasons.

This project was interesting because we got to see the different perspectives on this Hospital from the different teams at DCAMM. Where Real State, Planing and Design and construction team do their part throughout all the phases.

Day 2: It Looks Like a place for communication.

Intercultural Competence in an office to me means that I can speak freely on my side of things, but also that I’m going have the same level of respect when it comes to listening to my pears. At DCAMM there’s a lot of levels of communication. When it come to project management, communication is key with your team to have a good project delivery, but also with the users and the public realm as a company that works for the government. When it comes to people culture everyone is welcome to speak, but also they encourage you to voice your career expectation and help you get to the level you want to be in at the company.

Day 1: Workplace Colaboration

DCAMM works under the executive branch of the government. They have different groups that help manage the buildings in Massachusetts. Collaboration happens between all of them but all this different branches work as a hierarchy. They all seem really involve in the each project although they work under the government sometimes politically speaking they may not agree with every decision but ultimately they all like working towards the same goals when it comes to projects.

Day 0: I am Domenica

Hello Everyone! My name is Domenica Garcia. Im on my 5th year at the BAC for my Bachelor of Architecture. Im Originally from Ecuador move to NY about 7 years and now Im here in Boston!

I would love to work in a place where all voices are heard and that you are not afraid to speak up or say something wrong. I would love to worked with people that encourage development in all aspects of design.

My BAC buddy was Jimena Salaverry(Right) she is in the Master program of interiors. She is an architect already in Peru, so she was a great source of experience, specially since I wanted to learn her experience in Latin America. Thank you for your insight and learning with me!
