“Was rewatching the 1996 and it struck me that no-one checked on Moceanu after she landed head first on the beam in the event final. I guess the gymnast are so full of adrenaline that they can’t properly judge themselves if they are fine (thinking of Downie on qual floor 2016 as well). What if the judges would be able stops the routine (stop the clock) after a bad fall to have a doctor look at the gymnast and if the doctor says its ok the gymnast could continue. Lots of sports stops the clock when someone is injured so why would this not be possible in gymnastics? And too be honest, if you land head first during your routine you are probably out of medal contention anyway so the extra time to catch your breath during the medical examination or the risk of being prevented on medical grounds from continuing would not have any major impact on the final standing of the meet. Would be happy to hear other’s thoughts on this 😀”
