Leote Rec #78: Don Campau
Musician, radio host and archivist, Don Campau has been active in music since 1969. From 1969-1974, Don, Geoff Alexander and other friends recorded as The Roots Of Madness, a bizarre, avant-garde collective that released one record album in 1971. The early tapes are now also available as CD’s.
From 1974-1976 Don and Geoff owned Dogmouth Records, a retail outlet in Los Gatos that carried used and unusual LPs, many of which were rare and imported. In 1978 Don began hosting a radio program on KKUP-FM in Cupertino, California. At the time, the show featured jazz, ethnic, contemporary classical, improvised and some early home recordings. In 1985 the format of "No Pigeonholes" was established and became home recorded cassettes from the international home recording movement called "cassette culture". The music covered many styles from rock, folk, outsider, oddball, punk, electronic and much more.
On 1 August, 2009, Campau started the web site project, The Living Archive Of Underground Music, which gives his personal history of the cassette culture/ home recorded music movement.

This tape was made right before I heard about the Cassette Culture network of home tapers trading tapes though magazines like Option and Sound Choice. It was never re-issued (so far) on CD. Full of half baked ideas, soulful outpourings, garage rock, free improv and sporadic songs, it probably should have been called a Don & Greg tape because Greg plays on many tracks. There are several solo pieces though and I guess that's the reason I just put my name on it. It was really just for my own benefit because I wasn't even trading this tape to anyone at the time. A very young Nicole Campau (my eldest daughter) is heard on "Hey Moyo". Geoff Alexander is heard on flute on "Flute and Guitar". "Polish Candy" is a dub version of the song that would appear on "New Monterey Road Sounds" later. The title of the tape came from a saying, a philosophy in fact, of taking a different way home from work as often as possible and putting myself into unusual situations and places to gain raw experience. We're on The Radio (Again)!
The Really Good Pot Roast will once again be on the radio. This time right here in the good old US of A. The first track from our newest CD, You Have Died of Dysentery, If You Only Knew, will be played on Don Campau's "No Pigeonholes". The show can be heard on KKUP 91.5FM in the South Bay, Santa Cruz, and Monterey Bay, California. If you're not in that area of California you can download the show as a PodCast from the website.

There’s a radio host based in California named Don Campau. With his radio show No Pidgeonholes, he’s dedicated to playing and showcasting home recordings and independent music from around the world. Rob and I were told about his show by a fellow 5090 musician, Ultraviolet Eye Jeff. We checked out the show, and sent off our CD’s to Don.
There’s a small network of radio stations that carry his shows here in the US, and in Europe. Today we found out two of our songs will be on the European shows this month on Radio Marabu. The shows are available now here for streaming or download as podcasts.
