Jermaine Jackson recalls a moment during the Victory Tour meetings with promoter Don King. Michael was speaking about giving more back to the fans and pushing the show higher when Don suddenly cut him off:
“Michael! Remember this. It don’t matter whether you’re a rich nigger, a poor nigger or just a nigger. No matter how big you get, this industry’s still gonna treat you like a nigger.”
The room froze. It was blunt, shocking, and uncomfortable. But Michael broke the silence, he laughed first. He wasn’t offended. To him, it was raw truth about how the music industry viewed Black artists.
Sometimes the harshest words aren’t meant to insult, but to expose the reality of a system. And Michael, coming from Gary, Indiana, understood that all too well.
