A diet rich in organic fruits and vegetables is not just good for you, it can help prevent and fight cancer. Quercetin is a flavonoid found in tomatoes, onions, kale, broccoli, citrus and many other fruits and vegetables that has been linked to preventing cancer spread and tumor growth when exposed in high doses. Quercetin is found in higher concentrations in organics and even higher in organics grown in soil that has been treated organically longer. Interestingly pesticides used to promote crop regularity and bounty is linked to causing cancer, while natures fruits untouched offer cancer fighters. Quercetin is effectively toxic to cancer. We all have the ability to save lives without any training at all. Many of us are eligible to donate blood and platelets. Donating blood is common and easily accessible. Donating platelets is a little different. Donation facilities are not as plentiful and the process is more involved. For these and other reasons they are in higher demand. Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy can use up to 8 units of platelets a week. I recently donated platelets at the closest facility to my home which was an hour and a half away. After my health history paper work and getting "hooked up" to the machines through two IVs, one in each arm, I sat comfortably in a large lazy boy-esque bed for an hour and a half. They calculated my platelet count, height and weight to determine how many platelets would be safe for me to donate. As my platelets we're retrieved from one arm, red blood cells were returned into the other. I got to watch a movie of my choice, and although I couldn't move my arms for the entire time it was really quiet nice and relaxing! It felt like I had a large cat sitting on either arm as they slowly began to tingle. This process also depletes calcium and I got very cold. Not being able to move, one of the nurse attendants gladly brought me a blanket when I needed it and tucked me in. It's not comfortable, it may not be convenient, but many of us have a healthy platelet count that allows us to participate in saving someone's life.
