It had been a long time, since I was aware of the existence of this drama, but because I didn’t want to have another drama filled with fat shaming, I thought I might just avoid it, but I ended up giving in to the temptation (coz who wouldn’t be tempted to watch a drama with Sonamoo, Boyfriend’s Dong Hyun and Hong Yoon Hwa?) and watched it.
The Miracle (My Secret Diary) supernatural (body-swapping) romance web series. Kwon Si Ah and Kwon Shi Yun are twins. While Kwon Si Ah is an idol, Kwon Shi Hyun - who doesn’t have a perfect silhouette - is just a outcasted high scholer who likes to spend time in her room. One day, she encounters a tarot cards’ reader who allow her to do a wish. Kwon Shi Yun wishes to become her sister and ends up getting just that.
As always, I tried to keep the review with the less spoilers possible, but some might have slip, so stay careful as you read. By the way, there’s one spoiler identified. If you don’t want to read it, just skip the parenthesis.
What really hit me in the first episodes was how much fat shamming there was. I mean, Kwon Shi Yun is played by Hong Yoon Hwa, a successful plus size woman, but she’s presented as ugly and put aside because of how she looks. I knew it’s to give a context and everything, but there’s no need to put it to that extent. You don’t need others to treat her badly to make understand that she doesn’t like herself. Believe me, just having her wish to leave the school as soon as possible, look at herself and compare herself to Si Ah and locking herself in her room all the time would have been enough. You don’t need to put as much hate towards her a the screenwriter did (I mean, her parents are fine, but her sister and other high schoolers are just awful). So, since I already wrote about that, let’s pass to something else. The drama is relatively short (12 episodes of 15 minutes [180 minutes]) and quite well-paced. There’s not too much useless lengths in the story. Well, that’s what I thought in general and what seemed to be thought by most of the viewers. On my side, I thought there were some boring episodes because I thought the Si Ah x Ban Hae Sung was kind of useless and excessively cringy. I mean, I skipped those scenes... It wasn’t as if I missed something. The romance aside, most of the drama revolves around the relationship between the two sisters, which is kind of nice and refreshing (for once, the romance isn’t that important). But overall, it’s a really typical story. It’s not the first time I saw that “by default” boddy-swapping plot and probably not the last time. The last thing I want to talk about is the ending. I found it perfect. It wasn’t a nice conclusion and let some hope to the viewers.
For what it is of the characters, I’ll have to admit that the female lead was my favorite. She’s really shy and tormented at the start, but she’s interesting because such personality brings the viewer to ask himself how she will evolve and hope she will turn into a strong woman. Her evolution takes sometimes. I wished it had been more obvious, but it’s still there and ends up leading to some quite nice scenes in the end (SPOILER [go to the end of the parenthesis if you don’t want to read it]! There’s a guy in her school that the female lead like and, at the end, he asks her to exchange numbers and seems interested, but she rejects him like a fucking bad-ass. I love her for that.). For what it is of Si Ah, she was quite annoying. I didn’t feel as if she was adding much to the story, since she was always butting heads with Shi Yun and making problems for absolutely nothing because she’s too obsessed by herself. What’s more, she evolves really slowly, which makes her stay a bitch for most of the drama. Then for the Kwon parents, they were useless, had double-standard and were kind of annoying because of how much they cared about Si Ah and seemed to not really care about Shi Yun most of the time. For what it is of the idol group in which Si Ah is, they appear nearly never and don’t add much to the overall story. Finally, for what it is of Ban Hae Sung, I mean, it’s sweet, my boy is in a drama, but even if Ban Hae Sung wasn’t there, the drama would have been the same. In short, another useless (and bratty, by the way) character.
I’ll conclude there because I don’t want to rant too much on that drama that isn’t that bad in the end. The plot would be worth 7.5/10. The characters would be a 2.5/5. And the tearjerker factor would be a 0/5.
