TCAF Programming for Saturday, May 11 in Learning Center 1
at the Toronto Reference Library, 1st floor. 789 Yonge Street.
10am-11am Spotlight: Frederik Peeters
Frederik Peeters will make his first Canadian appearance at TCAF, and he is best known to English audiences for his touching, poignant memoir Blue Pills. However in the European market, Peeters is perhaps best known for his incredible high-concept science fiction graphic novels. Now, with his TCAF debut book Sandcastle, Peeters will merge those two seemingly disparate audiences. Join moderator Xavier Guibert (Du9.com) in a lively discussion and presentation from the new work.
11am-12pm Spotlight: Chihoi
Chihoi is a young cartoonist who has been active in the comics community of his native Hong Kong. A member of the 'Cockroach' and 'Springrolllll' collectives as well as the Yummy Dragon anthologies. Chihoi and his contemporaries offer a close-up view of a chaotic, overpopulated, lively, noisy, tender and brutal metropolis. It’s a personal and always surprising vision, with a corrosive humour that is sometimes macabre and often surrealistic and poetic. Chihoi's work has appeared in French and Italian, and he is a veteran of the European convention circuit. The Library (Conundrum) is his introduction to North American audiences and TCAF is his first North American appearance. Join Conundrum Publisher Andy Brown for a presentation from Chihoi’s work and a feature interview.
12:15 - 1:15pm Spotlight: Ulli Lust
A talented Austrian cartoonist who makes her home in Berlin, Germany, Ulli Lust is well known across Europe for her cartooning. Her debut full-length graphic novel Today is the Last Day of the Rest of Your Life won huge acclaim in 2011, including taking the prestigious Angouleme “Revelation” prize. Now this important work of memoir and reportage has made its way to English audiences, and Ulli Lust and Verlag Der Tagesspiegel journalist Lars von Torne as they explore this important and highly-anticipated TCAF debut.
1:30 - 2:30pm Spotlight: Éric Lambé
Haunting, evocative, highly detailed—all words that can be used to describe the comics of French experimental comics author Éric Lambé. His work as a part of the publisher/collective Fremok has been celebrated in North America at the Center for Book Arts, NYC, and championed by critic and Rebus Books Publisher Bill Kartalopoulos. Now join Kartalopoulous in an interview with the acclaimed creator, visiting TCAF from France, and experience this wonderful work for the first time.
2:45 - 3:45pm Spotlight: Judith Vanistendael
Judith Vanistendael creates comics “that have to do with life as it really is.” A two-time Angouleme Grand Prize nominee visiting TCAF from her home in Brussels, Vanistendael recently celebrated the release of her first English language graphic novel—When David Lost His Voice. A gripping story about a family suffering under the shadow of a cancer diagnosis, Vanistendael weaves an important and touching story. Please welcome Vanistendael to Toronto, as she joins The Ohio State University Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum’s Caitlin McGurk in a discussion of her work.
4:00 - 5:00pm Spotlight: DONGERY, with Flu Hartberg & Marc Bell
BELL DO DONGERY: “Dongery is a notorious fanzine collective from Norway who just put out their 1500 pg (!) collection book. Dongery-fan and Canadian uncle, Marc Bell will be talking to us about our production, preferably in Smurf voice and costumes. The focus will be on things like fanzine art, collective process and art, comics, art. Definitely not for kids.”
