Am I seeing correctly that there are only 61 Karl Heisenberg x Donna Beneviento fics on AO3? I'm surprised - the potential for angst-ridden romance is insane.
Such as:
Falling in love with Donna becomes the reason why Karl accepts his fate as a prisoner. He chooses to love her and keep her safe rather than risk losing her to his war.
Falling in love with Karl becomes Donna's reason to see that her adopted life is a lie. She chooses, for the first time, to stand up and fight for own future rather than let Miranda decide it. He gives her courage.
Through loving Karl, Donna finds her self-worth and her voice. Her own identity. Gradually she feels like she's lost herself among so many dolls, like she doesn't need to split herself among them. She takes back the pieces of her Cadou one at a time while Angie cheers her on: "We don't need them anymore! We're better this way!" Until the last split piece left is inside Angie herself...
Karl and Donna fall in love, but neither changes their view on whether to stay in the village or break free. Donna truly sees Miranda as her adopted mother, and it breaks her heart that Karl believes that Miranda's gifts are prison shackles. Karl sees how Donna is trapped in a web of deceit and blinds herself to the truth. Can they reconcile, or do heartbreak and death follow?
Or, we spice up RE8 - Karl and Donna fall in love, both are trying to talk through their different views on the Miranda situation, but Ethan arrives and bulldozes the village overnight for a baby. Donna dies among the dolls that failed to protect her. Karl dies having lost his love and his bid for freedom. They reunite in the Stratum.

If someone kidnaps you and calls you their child that does not make you their child. Even if they’ve brainwashed you into thinking that. The same goes with siblings. Just because Miranda says that Alcina is Karl’s sister doesn’t make Alcina that.
Donna and Karl weren’t even raised around each other.
