"Hello?" A voice calls from further inside the building. The place isn't very big, but it's very clean. ...Except for the mess of strange, random scattered objects lying atop the counters and shelves that run throughout the place.
"--Ah, shit," there's the sound of something hitting the floor and shattering, and then feet hurrying over to the entrance. "Sorry--" a scruffy man stands there with what appears to be purple ink splattered all over the front of his lab coat. "--I had a mishap with a car tire. Can I help you?"

"Ohh, more visitors! How wonderful! And how are you all doing? Enjoying your time here in Night Vale? Have you checked out any of our many spectacular tourist sites yet? I'd be more than happy to direct you to some of my particular favourites, but really, any of the places one might go here are excellent. ...With a few exceptions, of course. But there are always exceptions, no matter what town you're in, right?"

And double points for marking those hot spots.

♥: One thing you love about your Muse.
[Two words: character development. Seriously, his character arc is just the greatest thing ever and I can gush and gush about the whole thing for days. Just ask York, she’s had to suffer through me babbling on about it so many times aksjfh
But, seriously. I can’t really even narrow it down more than that, because I just love like everything about this asshole. This is not a great answer but askfjdh it’s hard for me to list just one little thing.]

"You ever wonder what it’d be like if we weren’t stuck here?"
That question takes Washington’s attention off of his lunch and has him shifting his gaze across the table to rest on his friend. His brow furrows a little in confusion, and his head tilts to the side in just the slightest motion.
"What do you mean—" He starts, speaking around a mouthful of food, but cuts himself off when Connie gives him a dirty look for it. Swallowing quickly, he clears his throat, and tries again. "What do you mean ‘if we weren’t stuck here?’ We all signed up for this, we’re all lucky to be here."
"…Right. Let me rephrase it, then: do you ever wonder what it might be like if we weren’t all here? Like, what it might be like if we all still met, but in a different setting?" That explanation seems to be a lot clearer, as Wash nods slowly, then visibly perks up.
"You mean like if we were all living more normal lives, with different jobs, but were still all friends and everything?" He asks, now even more interested in the conversation than before. Granted, he’d never thought about it before, but this is definitely something he’s interested in thinking about now. "Some sort of alternate universe kind of thing?"
"I guess that’s what I’m getting at, yeah." Connie nods, smiling very slightly. "I’ve always liked to consider what kind of jobs everyone else would be doing if they weren’t here."
"…What conclusion do you come to for me?" Wash can’t help but ask, now entirely curious, and looking it. There’s a smile on his face though, and already he’s starting to consider such things for everyone else, as well.
"You?" She repeats, raising a brow. Wash nods, and she smirks a little. "I always kind of thought you might enjoy working at a pet store, or something. But then I realized you’d probably try to take home all the cats and get fired." That earns her a bit of a dirty look, but she just laughs it off quietly. "I don’t know, I could kind of see you working as a rookie on a police force, or something." Wash considers that for a few seconds, and nods slowly, figuring that could be a possibility for where he might have gone if he hadn’t joined up to the UNSC.
"And what about you?" He asks, smile making a comeback. If anything, he’s actually more interested in hearing what Connie would be doing if she wasn’t here—it’s not often at all that he hears her talking about herself, so whenever he has a chance to learn a little something more, he takes it. "What would you be doing?"
"I’ve always kind of thought…maybe an archaeologist, or something like that." She answers, appearing thoughtful as she speaks. "Even a museum curator. That’s always sounded sort of interesting to me."
"That’d be neat," he agrees, smiling much more broadly now that she’d shared something about herself with him. He’d have even questioned her more about it right there, if not for the sudden thought that strikes him then. "Oh! And York would be a locksmith. Though probably not a very good one."
"I had sort of the same thought," Connie agrees, seemingly amused, though whether it’s because of Wash’s comment, or the smirk he’s wearing, seeming so proud of himself, it’s unclear. "And I figured Carolina might be some sort of gymnast or acrobat. Those kinds of things are really competitive, and…" She trails off, and Wash gets what she’s saying and nods his agreement.
"Definitely. And, uhm… Wyoming could be a bad comedian."
"Maine might be a wrestler."
"And North could make a pretty good teacher—like, for elementary school kids!"
"Florida could be a counselor, or something. Probably in a highschool."
"Yeah, and— South…" Wash trails off, seeming stumped on that one. Frowning slightly, he shakes his head. "I don’t know about her."
"Hm, yeah, I always have a little trouble there." Connie agrees, and Wash just smiles, setting his gaze back down on the food on his tray. He’s silent for a few moments, and that seems to get his friend’s attention. "…What?" She asks, sounding confused and, perhaps even a touch concerned.
"It’s nothing," he replies, breathing a soft laugh and looking back over at her. "It’s just kind of nice to think about things like this. I mean, I’m proud to be here and all, but sometimes it does sound like it could be nicer if we all knew each other in a nicer environment, where there wasn’t the threat of dying everywhere." That sends Connie into her turn to be silent, but she offers a small nod after a few moments.
"I know it does. That’s why I think about it."
