"You’re right. I don’t think anybody’s ready, really - not to be a cohesive team - but, as the Director said, ‘Ahgent Cah-rolahna, ah will make pahsonell decisions.’ It’s out of my hands - all I can do is give recommendations." She lapsed into the accent naturally; most people assumed this was because she mimicked him a lot - really, it was her natural accent, buuut they weren’t allowed to know that, so she let them make whatever assumptions they wanted.
"If you are, though, I’ll be sure to get you caught up. Nobody I work with is a burden; sometimes we just have to take a mission a bit slower to help them stay caught up, and in this case, it’s the whole team that needs to stay caught up." Yes, she was frustrated - but, on the bright side, they’d get to do team practices soon - and she could establish her leadership and orders of business, and learn who was good at what… It was a lot to take in, for everybody. She just hoped it would work out.
"It’s worrisome, but there isn’t much we can do until tomorrow, so… I’ll shoot you a comm if you’re on the roster." That was assuming he was in armor. They were supposed to be in armor as often as possible, so that shouldn’t be a problem as far as she was concerned. "Just don’t stay up too late, alright?"
He listened intently, mind wandering a bit as she spoke to him, nodding his head along as he uttered out "yes ma'm" every other sentence.
When she finished, he glanced back up at her, "Uh, you aren't gonna stay up late tonight?" He let his disappointment show through. He was excited to meat his teammate, and if that meant her going to bed earlier than him, he would just have to work around it.
"I mean..could we get together sometime." It sounded like he was just spilling the words before he thought of them. "For uh--- to get --training. No, uh...." Yeah, he was interested in her, but it was hard to get out. "So we can get to know each other more?"
York stared up at the agent, remembering the files he read to put a name with a face. "Uhm, are you agent Maine...?"
Well….this was unexpected.
He’d heard about the tan freelancer —how he seemed to have no recollection of his comrades, no memories to speak of— and honestly, Maine hadn’t believed the stories. In his devastating lack of sympathy, the titan in white had credited the rumors to a well executed ruse, no doubt put into place by the locksmith himself.
But now, with the other agent looking up at him and inquiring about his identity, Maine noticed a disturbing lack of fear in the other’s eyes.
Sure, there was the uneasiness that came with meeting the behemoth for the first time, but given their history, York should have been quaking in his boots.
"………" There was no verbal answer to York’s question. The only gesture offered was a slow nod, and the imposing presence that came with turquoise eyes narrowing behind a golden pane.
For a moment, Maine almost felt sorry for York. He remembered the first time he got to…meet York for the first time, and the other guy had an ego the side of a pelican. Now? He looked like he was about to turn tail and run.
It was amusing, to say the least.
"…..York." The soldier in white nodded in response, taking the other’s hand in a firm, subtly dangerous grip and shook it briefly.
He didn’t know what happened, how York lost his memory, or if this was really all some elaborate joke, but considering their history, Maine figured that they might be better off this way.
In any case, he’d just get to beat York within an inch of his life again if this was some ruse. It was a win-win, really.
York gave another quick uneasy smile, dropping his hands at his side and looking at the floor. Anything else than the giant before him. His size was most certainly intimidating. Words were having trouble forming. But York wanted to convey that he is excited to work in the field with him.
He used his hands to try to help his conversation, blabbing out a few garbled phrases before finding pieces of words. "I uh...Excited to see you, train...and uh...." He ran a hand through his hair nervously, still looking at the other's boots, "Missions will be...cool."
He meant to stop there, just shut his trap and get the hell out of there. But it's hardwired into his brain to never shut up when he needed to, and let a small "...You're scary" spill out, gasping at the realization of what he said.

He was making small talk. She was alright with that; she would be too, honestly. She wasn’t great at conversation, but she tried her best to be as straightforward and honest as possible.
"For me, or everybody else?" She grinned slightly, not waiting for an answer before continuing. "Well, I had to design a couple of new hand-to-hand training simulators the other day, and I had to run a pass through to let certain groups train together. As for myself, I like to think it’s going alright. It’ll take me a while to get used to fighting on a ship again, and I’d love to get a few squad practices in so I can get a feel for the teams…"
"Speaking of squad practices!" Her eyes widened as she remembered something, her smile fading slightly. "The date for our first mission has been moved up drastically. The last few recruits we have to pick up are a long way away, so we’re making a pit stop. I told them we weren’t ready, but… The mission roster’s going to be posted tomorrow, and squad training will be that afternoon… So… Keep a lookout for that."
This was more a list of tasks; you couldn’t ask her a vague question like ‘how’s training?’ without expecting a somewhat lengthy and vaguely distracted response, because for her, training was everybody. Individual training was kind of a side track; as the Field Officer, she’d be expected to have a functional unit, and as a Spec Ops officer, that meant more than just ‘following orders’. That meant nearly seamless functionality. The first few missions… Would be messy. Hopefully nobody died.
York was not expecting her answer. From someone who seemed so stand-offish, she really went off on the subject. It seems he hit a good topic with her. So he learns that she is a fighter, trainer, everything a good leader should be. He felt a little speck of appreciation for working under her just from that.
"Am I included on our first mission?" He was curious, there was no way the Director saw York fit for a mission yet. Sure, his training was helping him progress extremely fast, but he still felt he wasn't ready for a real ,mission. A thought of him on the field the way he was was insane, to be honest.
He quickly picked out the right wording to communicate that to the redhead without making him seem weak, "...Our of all the wise decisions and sacrifices the Director has made, I don't think him putting me out with the team now is a great idea. I could risk our lives and get in the way...."
"Hey man, you having any luck remembering shit yet?"
"Oh, you’re uhm!" He stopped to think for a second, "Agent Colorado, right?"
"I opted for an alternative procedure- Essentially, I have what you’d probably call a USB slot in place of the implant. I still have the fucker, just not in my head all the time.
"That's a good idea." He hummed, feeling the back of his own head to find his AI port. "Why don't they do that to all of the people with AI?"

He put on a smile then, trying to put his mind at ease. Most of the tension was coming from getting the wrong name, but seeing how he had it right, some of York's anxieties melted away, leaving behind the general fear.
The other agent was huge compared to him, but he held out his hand to shake regardless, trying to keep his arm steady so he wouldn't see him shaking. "It's uh, very nice to meet you, Agent Maine."
