Excuse him, anon. Apparently nose-bleeds that are caused by⌠innapropriate thoughts donât happen only in anime. If youâll continue to excuse him, heâs going to go get cleaned up, and then pretend to forget that youâd asked him this question.
"Yes, thatâs what I mean, too; Iâll still be glad to be in your presence for⌠Well, for as long as Iâm in it.â Nodding to himself as he cleared that up, Cecil just carried on beaming, admittedly quite happy to hear such a thing from Carlos. It wasnât so much that he never heard things like that, it was just⌠Carlos spent so much time working, it often seemed like he preferred to focus on science over their relationship. Really, Cecil just thought he needed to understand that there were other important things out there, and while science was important, sometimes you just needed to take a step back and spend some time with your doting boyfriend. âŚAnd he was glad that things seemed to be going that way tonight.
At the suggestion that they could leave the coffeeshop now, he slowly lowered his cup and glanced across the table at the other man. Had it really been that obvious that he was excited to get going? Here heâd thought heâd taken a long enough sip to drain more of the coffee, but a short enough one that it wouldnât be noticeable what heâd been trying to do. Apparently not. Well, at least it didnât seem to bother Carlos, so as the scientist seemed to get ready to stand, Cecil nodded.
"That sounds good to me," he concluded, keeping his coffee in one hand and Carlosâs hand in the other as he slid from his seat. Pausing for a moment, he seemed tempted to add âif you donât mind,â but considering Carlos was the one to suggest itâŚhe couldnât mind, right? Brightening again and just deciding to go with this, Cecil waited for the other man to join him in standing. "Did you walk or drive to the station? My car is still there if youâd like to head to your place that way, but Iâm fine with whatever you want.â Still just smiling pleasantly, his eyebrows rose in question as he watched Carlos, honestly not having a preference which way they go, just happy that they were doing this whole thing to begin with.
"Perhaps we should take your car." Carlos replied. "That way you don't have to walk back to the station and get it later." ...If Cecil was going to be leaving later, that is. --That's not to say that Carlos was expecting (or even wishing) for something to happen, but he wouldn't be against it if Cecil were to spend the night. Perhaps they could watch television until they both fell asleep on the couch, or something. Just something to show that he could distance himself from work for a while and busy himself with spending time with Cecil, as well as just to... well, spend time with Cecil.
"Unless you spend the night," he said nonchalantly, for he really didn't believe that his words could be taken any other way than "you can stay over." There wasn't meant to be any added insinuation for anything more, as Carlos thought (and was sure that Cecil did to) it was certainly too early in their relationship to even think of anything more intimate than sweet kisses and hand-holding.
"Oh dear," Cecil murmured, almost to himself, as Khoshekh meowed in that way he did when he wanted food. "I think heâs hungry. I should probably refill his food bowlâŚâ Still more speaking to himself than to Carlos, he eyed the cat for a moment, then turned to glance back at the door, but found his gaze brought to a pause on the scientist before it could get that far. âŚHe looked scared. That was odd, he hadnât thought Carlos was afraid of cats, especially not since heâd come down here specifically to see the one living here.
"Are you okay?" He asked, concerned, eyebrows knitting a little as he studied the other manâs face. Noticing then that it felt as though his hand was being strangled, Cecilâs gaze moved downward, blinking in confusion. This was all very odd, not to mention a touch painful now with the way Carlos had a death grip on his hand. Pulling his fingers off of the scientistâs hand, he attempted to stretch them out like that might ease off some of the pain, and promptly looked back up to Carlosâ face. "I didnât think you were afraid of cats⌠Why did you ask to see him if you are?" Jumping to conclusions? Maybe a little, but what other explanation was there for that look on a personâs face when they found themselves staring at a cat? Granted, the hovering thing was pretty unusual, but Carlos had seen much stranger things! It had to be the cat.
It was almost tough to hear what Cecil said, as Carlos hadn't been paying much attention to anything but the... the floating cat-looking thing. He just couldn't bring himself to call it a true cat, and was shocked that Cecil was able to. "That's not--no--I'm not afraid of cats, but that is not a cat," he was positive. It sure looked like a cat, but that meow suggested that it wasn't. ...Okay, yes, Khoshekh appeared to be feline, but could such a small creature make such a... monstrous noise? Maybe--maybe it's current body was just a form it could take. That had to be it, right?
Through his fear was loads of interest, and Carlos wanted to study Khoshekh, but at the same time he wanted to get out of there, fast.

You know, every time Carlos got used to something in Night Vale, another thing popped up to make him question if this place really was just a gathering for all things strange, or if he'd just lost his mind. The newest addition to the town that had him wondering on his sanity was a figure standing in futuristic-looking blue and white armor. There was a moment of silence where he just took in the sight, but a moment later he addressed the stranger. "--Hello?" Maybe s/he(he didn't know) spoke English, or maybe they simply talked through complex hand signals. The best way to find out was to just start with the basics and strike up a conversation.
Pleased to hear that the pastries werenât breaking the law, any concern quickly disappeared from Cecilâs face. About to open his mouth to then ask if Carlos was ready to see Khoshekh, as that was at least part of the reason heâd stopped by, he found himself beat to the punch by the other man. Simply excited to have his boyfriend meet the station cat that they all adored so much, Cecil nodded eagerly and reached out to grasp Carlosâ hand.
"Yes, Iâll take you right now," he announced cheerfully, keeping hold of the other manâs hand as he stepped past his desk and began to make his way down the hallway, dragging Carlos behind him. It was always fun to show the cat off to people who stopped in for visits, and he knew that Khoshekh always enjoyed the attention, but he was more excited than usual this time because he was certain that Carlos of all people would be more fascinated by the little guy. There was a chance that it would only be scientific fascination over anything else, but still. Khoshekh grew on everyone.
Pushing his way into the menâs bathroom, Cecil continued to tug Carlos in after him and brought the other man over to the sinks where the cat hovered. Only now releasing the other manâs hand, he gestured to the feline and shot a glance back to the scientist, eyebrows raised as he waited for the inevitable âawww.â
"This is him! This is Khoshekh. Khoshekh, this is Carlos.â
When Cecil grabbed his hand, Carlos took it a step further and laced their fingers together, like being close enough that they were intertwined made up for all the time they'd spent apart. He allowed the other man to drag him to the men's bathroom, and upon entering he paused. He didn't have to lower his gaze to the ground to see the cat, as it was floating in the air. ...Honestly he should've been expecting a catch. Of course the cat was floating. Of course.
Carlos side-eyed Cecil, confused. How could the man just act like this was normal? He listened as Cecil introduced the two of them, and hell, he half expected the cat to speak. Thankfully, nothing like that happened, so maybe the floating thing was the only abnormality.
...Scratch that. The cat--no, the thing, because that certainly couldn't be a cat--made a noise that was most definitely not a meow. It was like... a guttural roar that had Carlos flinching in surprise and squeezing a little too tight at Cecil's hand. The floating he could get past, sure. He'd seen weirder. But that sound? There was just no way that he was the only one who found it strange.
"What the hell--" he blurted, eyes wide to keep an eye on Khoshekh as he took a tentative step backwards.
As Carlos listed off the contents of the bag, Cecilâs gaze trailed over the pastries and he gave a slight nod. They all looked delicious, and even if it had been mentioned that the other man would maybe bring treats, this was certainly more than expected. Not that he was going to complain about it, of course.
"That sounds perfect,â he decided with a grin, finally pulling his face out of the paper bag. Setting it gently back down on his desk, Cecil folded the top over carefully to keep the contents fresh, even if they were likely to snack on some of it shortly, then set his attention once more on Carlos. âAll gluten free, I expect?â The question came paired with a raised eyebrow, knowing that the scientist knew about the law against wheat and wheat byproducts, but not entirely sure that he wouldnât disregard that law. One could never be certain with scientists when it came to such things, after all.
When the question arose, Carlos gave a nod. It was a darned shame that wheat and wheat by-products had been frowned upon by Night Vale, but he supposed it was with good reason. ...Great reason, actually, but he still missed it. "Of course," he sounded a little downcast, but gave a dismissive shake of his head to follow up, as if the action could disperse his momentary sadness.
"Now--can I meet your cat?" He raised a brow, eager to see the animal. It wasn't the whole reason he'd come over though, and he was sure he'd find a way to make that obvious, but at the moment, he really was interested in meeting the cat--Khoshekh, wasn't it?
Not noticing Carlos entering the room, too distracted to do so and unable to hear his footsteps over the sounds of the weather, Cecil gave a slight start when there was suddenly a paper bag set down on the periphery of his vision. Blinking, his gaze was drawn upward, and though he already knew who to expect, his expression still brightened immensely when he caught sight of the familiar lab coat, the familiar clothes beneath, and of course, the face above that was just as familiar, especially with all that perfect hair.
"Carlos!" He greeted cheerily, pleasant smile quickly becoming an eager one. Promptly removing his headphones and standing from his chair, he took a step closer to the other man and pressed a quick peck of a kiss to his lips. Just as further greeting. Peering into the scientistâs face for a moment as he pulled back, Cecil then glanced back down to the paper bag and picked it up, curious. "What did you bring?" He asked, balancing the bag on one hand and using the other to open it so he could peer inside.
Cecil did seem busy, but not busy enough to keep him from getting up to greet Carlos. The scientist gave a smile and responded happily to the kiss for as long as it lasted - which wasn't very long, but still - before watching as the other man went to inspect the bag of goodies.
"Not much," he answered with a wave of his hand in the direction of the bag, as if to show it off even though Cecil already had a clear view of it. "Some muffins, a couple of danishes, and a cherry turnover. I would've gotten two, but it was big enough that I figured we could share it." Maybe it was all a little too much for the two of them--they certainly didn't need it all--but there was something nice about spoiling Cecil.
" Um, " he said at the same time in a quite tone, his expression mirroring the otherâs for a moment; he wondered if their thoughts followed one another as well, the situation reminding him of the dopplegangers Cecil mentioned once before. However this manâ heâ Carlos⌠His âtwinâ didnât appear hostile as tales told, but Carlos knew better than to assume information. Now would be the best time to learn and understand a phenomenon himself.
" Hello, " he replied, observing the man across from him, partly to ensure they were indeed the same man, wearing the same clothes all the way down to the buttons of their shirts. " Carlos, I take it? "
"That's me," he confirmed, then hastily added; "--and you, apparently." He allowed himself to relax a little now that it was apparent that no fists were going to be flying into anyone elses (or their own???) face to start the battle to find out just who was the superior Carlos.
"How did you get here?" He couldn't help but question--it was in his nature. Or perhaps, he was the one who'd gotten somewhere else? Granted, this looked like his lab, but seeing as there were two of him there could be two of his workplace. ...That would surely be something to figure out. "...Or maybe I'm the one out of place." He added to go along with his thoughts. That... wasn't something he was fond of thinking, as no one liked being in unfamiliar places. Even if those places were exactly like where he came from.
Iâd like that, yes. I⌠think I have some free time now? I could swing by. Even bring over some treats.
That would be wonderful! Khoshekh loves company, and Iâm betting heâs pretty bored all on his own in the bathroom right now. And, you know, I wouldnât mind seeing you, either.
--You leave him in the bathroom? I would be rather bored, too. I'm on my way over now. See you soon. ~cooltransition~ Carlos stepped inside the station and made his way to where Cecil was. Once he caught sight of the man a smile lit up his face, and he moved closer to set a paper bag of sweets down on the desk. "Hi," he mouthed, unsure if Cecil was currently working--he didn't appear to be speaking to any listeners at the moment, but he could just be playing music. --Or, 'the weather', as they called it around here.
Iâve never mentioned Khoshekh? Oh, heâs adorable, Iâll have to bring you in to meet him one day, youâll love him.

It was a chilling moment when Carlos turned and found himself face-to-face with... well, himself. His mind blanked, and for an intelligent man he found he had nothing to say. --Wait. Hadn't Cecil told him about this once? The, ah... the dopplegangers! Yes, he'd said that a sandstorm brought them in, and that everyone and their copies had had to fight each other else they'd take over... themselves...? It hadn't made much sense, but few things in Night Vale did. Still, Carlos took note not to make any sudden movements. This guy--he--Carlos--... his twin didn't seem hostile, but it was still safe to be a little cautious. "...Um." He began. And he hated that word, 'um.' Hated using it, as it meant he had no clue what to say. "--Hello?" ...Well, it was a better start than 'um.'
"Well, I personally think itâs about time we try something new,â Cecil spoke in response to Carlosâ comment about the plan being different from anything theyâd done yet. It wasnât meant as a slight or anything, in fact he was excited that the other man had been the one to suggest it, and really, he was just glad for a bit of a change. Not that he had any problem at all with going out to dinner with Carlos, but still. Trying something different was always nice.
Smiling still, seemingly unable to drop the cheery expression, Cecilâs gaze dropped down to their hands on the table. For a few moments, he simply watched Carlosâ thumb running over his fingers, almost as though hypnotized by it. Though, really, it was justâŚrelaxing. Comforting, even if he was already pretty perfectly comfortable. Head tilting slightly to one side as he continued to watch, his attention was only dragged up to Carlosâ face again once he heard his voice.
"Of course I donât mind!" He insisted with a shake of his head. How could he mind? Carlos would be cooking for him, it was the least he could do to wait around and keep him company while he did it, geez. Plus, you know, more time with Carlos was always nice, even if it was spent waiting for something. He wasnât very picky about it a lot of the time. "We can use the time to talk! And I can help you out with some of the cooking too, if youâd like. Even if itâs just simple things, I donât mind, Iâll just be glad to spend the time with you." As if to drive the point home, Cecil gave the other manâs hand a light squeeze, offered a smile with a bit of a blush to it, then quickly moved to take another sip of his own coffee. And no it was not a really long sip because he was eager to get going, how could you possibly think that?
At Cecil's words, Carlos gave a hum of agreement. He had no doubts they'd find some things to do while the food was cooking, and even long after. It was a nice surprise that had the scientists cheeks colored a slight red when informed that Cecil was just happy to be around him. As mentioned before, feelings weren't quite Carlos' forte. So, he'd never really been around people who'd been very affectionate, which made it quite a surprise--or more, a pleasant shock--to be around Cecil who seemed happy enough sharing what was on his mind.
"I'll be glad, too. --I mean, I am glad. I will just still be glad later on in the evening." He paused to notice the length of the sip Cecil took. It made him smile and raise a curious brow, head cocking slightly towards the side. "We can head out of here if you're ready?" He shifted a little, prepared to stand up. "Considering we can take these to go, we can head to the lab now and get a head-start on dinner, that way we won't be eating too late." He finished, watching Cecil's face and waiting for a response.
Hearing the really from Carlos then, Cecil perked right back up in a fraction of a second. That was all heâd wanted to hear, and he was immensely glad that the other man was going to take the rest of the day off just for him. And he was sure that there would be no big thing that happened between now and later in the evening, nothing like what had happened on their first date with those weird buzzing shadow beings. Or, you know, pretty sure.
"A home-cooked meal?" He repeated, surprised, once the scientist suggested it. Not that he had anything against itâif anything, that just sounded even better! As much as he loved going out to dinner with Carlosâwhich he very much didâhaving the man cook for him was just so much more personal. After all, you only really cooked meals for people you cared about, right? âOhh, Carlos, that sounds lovely!â Exclaiming perhaps a bit louder than was really necessary, Cecil reached across the table to rest his hand on the other manâs arm. Then, it slid slowly along it, pausing just for a second at his wrist, before continuing on to grab for Carlosâ own hand. âI would like that very much.â
The excitement from the other man was so obvious that it took up all of Carlos' focus, rendering him unable to do anything else but drink in the expression on his boyfriend's face.
The hand on his arm had posed as a distraction, and he glanced towards it (with a bit of a delayed reaction) and watched the way Cecil's thin fingers moved down along his skin. He didn't mind holding hands with the other man, and actually found he rather... enjoyed contact. He was awkward about it sometimes, yes, but overall it was nice. As if to prove this, and not just for the sake of doing it, Carlos stroked his thumb slowly along Cecil's fingers.
"I am glad to hear that," he confessed. "I know it's a little different from what we've done before, but it will be nice." He was sure of it. He could even show Cecil around the lab, assuming that was something he'd be interested in. Though, how anyone could not be interested in science, Carlos wasn't exactly sure. --But he was sure there'd be no issues, as Cecil always appeared fascinated when the topic came up. ...Or any other topic. ......Or whenever Carlos opened his mouth, really.
As he contemplated what to make, Carlos brought up his coffee to take a long drag of it. When he set it down again, he was sure he had thought up some good plans. "We can head right back to the lab after this. --As long as you do not mind waiting around while I cook, that is."
"Hmm, no, I wouldnât say that it was busyâŚâ Cecil gave his head a small, but somewhat thoughtful shake. Really, it had been a pretty typical morning, and all in all, pretty slow. If it had been busy, he would have had more to talk about and list off, and he was quite certain that Carlos himself must have had a busier morning. In fact, he was planning to ask just that, because not only was it polite to ask those questions of the people who asked you in the first place, but he was interested in hearing about the other manâs morning. Just as he was about to go ahead and ask though, Carlos beat him to speaking.
Blinking in surprise, he kept up the eye contact that the scientist seemed to intent on holding, and took a moment to search those dark, beautiful eyes opposite his own curiously, wondering where he was going with all this. His heart practically leapt in his chest upon hearing Carlos deciding to leave his work until the next day, but when the question of dinner came upâŚwell, needless to say, his stomach joined in with the leaping, and his smile that had calmed considerably as heâd gone on about his day brightened intensely. Dinner? With Carlos? So spontaneously? How could he possibly say no? Usually they had to plan a week in advance due to Carlosâ scientist hours, where he didnât work on a proper schedule and seemed to think that science was more important than anything else sometimes. While Cecil didnât disagree that science was important, he did like to think that sometimesâsometimesâhe might be a little more important. And it was little things like this made him feel that way.
âReally?" He asked, not doing much to contain his excitement. Although, while he felt like he could practically start bouncing in his seat, he did at least refrain from doing that. He could contain some amount of composure around Carlos when he wanted to, even in as wonderful a moment as this. "Oh, yes! That would be wonderful!" Nodding and smiling, nodding and smiling, that felt about all he was capable of at this moment, although he faltered for a second, taking a pause to watch Carlos carefully before continuing, a little less certain this time. "Are you sure you can do that, though? Your work isnât tooâŚimportant? It always sounds as though your projects shouldnât be interrupted⌠And I wouldnât want to cause that interruption.â
"Really," Carlos confirmed, allowing his smile to crack into a grin at his boyfriend's obvious excitement. He gave a nod at the other man's last sentence, as well as a quick flick of his wrist. "It will be alright. As long as nothing corrupts the town between now and later, it's fine if I take the night off." He was, after all, trying to split his time evenly between work and Cecil.
"Though..." here he fiddled with his cup, turning it between his palms. "Instead of actually going out, I was thinking that perhaps I could cook for you?" Maybe actually make it a normal date. 'Normal' seemed very rare in Night Vale, but Carlos was determined to recreate it. "I'm no five-star chef, but I can at least manage an okay dinner." Again he looked towards Cecil, seeking out the other man's reaction.
I'm attracted to you so strongly, scientists will have to develop a fifth fundamental force.
