don't you think there's something writers could potentially do about it? not about getting feedback, but maybe about spreading the word? i realized after reading your answer before that i'd never even considered just rebloggng a fic to get it out there (tho i only find fic through tumblr very rarely). I tried to figure out why I wouldn't have and the first thought that came to mind was that it was hard enough getting my *own* stuff noticed... and then I was reminded of bar owners who see other

bars on their street as competition when in reality it’s like… *no*, you all share a clientele. and then i felt like an asshole. so i’ve kinda resolved to always bumping fanfiction when i see it now. (though tumblr is really not freaking helping with this tag tracking garbage they’ve done, not to mention the other trials of getting a text/link post noticed on this site)

Well, there are a good handful of “Appreciate Fanfiction Writers” posts floating around tumblr plus others about raising awareness on how important it is to comment on people’s work. There have been some events like “Writers’ Appreciation Day” in which everyone shared recs about their favorite fanfiction writers, but I don’t feel like th situation has improved too much ): And now that tumblr ruined tracking tags it’s gonna get worse, I think. Tracking tags was great for unknown writers/artists to give their work visibility and now it’s just so impractical and stupid, and like you said, getting a text/link post noticed in this site is already hard enough, now it’s just gonna be impossible

mmmmm, i think you nailed what i was unable to put into words about what I don't like about kudos! yeah, on FF you can at least see a list of someone's favorites, kudos are noncommittal in that way. yeah, i also don't mean that everyone has to comment or that kudos are worthless... like, it's *fan*fiction, it's a labor of love at its roots and i do it to share a story with other people in the fandom... but yeah, i'd agree that a lot of readers don't realize how much a comment is worth.

wish I coulda just replied to the post, but you've got every right to feel bitter af... Tumblr is frustrating and as fickle as it is random and AO3 is some very special kind of unresponsive...

discussing it w someone we concluded the kudos system kinda fucks us writers. it makes readers feel like they did their part to show their appreciation but like.. idk, i compared it to comments being like a tip and kudos being like a verbal thanks

it also feels like someone just wiped their nosebleed and threw a buck at yr story, then moved on to do the same to someone else’s hard work… (referring a bit to E-rated fics when it comes to this analogy but…. it always kinda feels that way???)

It’s not just AO3 I think, it’s just writing in general, unless you hit a very specific kind of note or get liked by the right crew (read: the people w/ popular blogs that will reccommend you), you’ll get very little response overall.

I always thought the “kudo” system in AO3 is kind of equivalent to the “favorite” in FF.Net, but maybe requires less commitment (there’s no section in AO3 with all the stories you’ve kudo’ed). It’s not totally terrible, but I kind of agree in that it screws us writers in that some people think they’ve done their part just leaving a kudo. And I’m not saying people who just leave kudos are bad readers at all (I myself am very terrible when it comes to commenting, I rarely ever do it), or that commenting should be mandatory, but it would be nice if half the people who left kudos would leave a comment. I think the kudo/comment verbal thanks/tip analogy is very spot on in this case. It’s no understatement that after pouring so much energy and time and feelings into a story, you just hope to get some sort of appreciation or validation for your work, and it really sucks that most writers rarely get it. When I write an emotionally charged scene I hope people will tell me how they felt about it, if it was lacking in some way or if I was able to convey the feelings I tried to portray.

I’ve been doing this fanfiction thing for eleven years and I’ve just come to terms with the fact that I’m never gonna be one of those “popular” writers, no matter what I do. I even feel kind of fortunate to know that I’ve been able to build a small but amazing pool of regular readers that leave the best kind of comments, many aren’t even that lucky. And even in spite of that there’s always that one story that no one reads and no one comments on. I have a ton of those that I’d felt very proud about and meant so much to me and it’s really frustrating and disappointing and it feels like may it wasn’t half as good as you thought because no one else seems to like it. I think some readers don’t even realize how fragile our writer self-steem can be and how much every comment means to us

diagnosed with breast cancer at 23 in june and stupidly thought I'd be over the hurdle after surgery... started chemo yesterday, will be p much infertile for 5~ years and medicated for ? years... research means shit against wishful self-delusion...

So sorry!  Cancer sucks.  And it’s never as simple as follow A, B, and C and then you are 100% cured and back to “normal”.  It’s really more of a chronic illness.  Sending you good vibes and spoonie hugs!

not sure if you're tired of asks regarding your midotaka extra game translation post, but i really, really wanted to a) thank you personally for that post and b) express how awesome i find your notes/analysis to be. I am also extremely suspect of that last little bit from Takao... not solely as a shipper, it honestly just feels shoehorned in. Like... mm, he takes *so* much pride in being Midorima's right (left?) hand man, I really do think 'annoyed' would be the prevailing emotion to this lol

Aww, thanks, you are so sweet! I am NEVER going to get tired of seeing how happy my translation made people (erm, most people, anyway). I read everyone’s reblog comments and tags and it gives me nice warm fuzzy feelings.

I don’t know how much it came across in the translation posts, but I am a big time midotaka shipper, so I was really pretty upset going into the chapter (a friend of mine who had read the scanlation was texting me STOP DON’T READ IT and I was all NO, I MUST KNOW), and then I read the chapter and…well, the relief I felt, I knew I couldn’t just keep that to myself.

Have you ever seen that official art picture, where Takao is pedaling the bike, and Midorima and Akashi are both in the rear car, and Takao is yelling (at one or both of them, unclear, but when I reblogged the picture I tagged it “get out of my boyfriend’s cart loser,” haha)? Anyway, I feel like that picture really captures how Takao must feel right now. THIS VEHICLE IS FOR TWO, BUDDY, STEP OFF.
