The Bees Are Dying for Short Term Profits
DO NOT BELIEVE THE LIES: we know why the bees are dying. The answer is Neonicotinoids, which, since their introduction to agricultural production in 1994, now account for about 90% of worldwide pesticide sales.
Neonicks seem like they’re great for farming; you douse the seeds, and never need to reapply. It saves farmers time and money.
It's also killing a lot of fucking bees, so probably not a good long term solution if you want to be able to grow anything other than fungus?
Bayer Cropscience, who you can find on facebook, is one of the major companies responsible for this mess, and they've always maintained the lie that their products are safe for bees. They make $$BILLIONS$$ on neonicks and don’t give a flying fuck what the consequences are. Maybe they started with good intentions, but Bayer in particular is reaching Super Villain levels of ironic malevolence toward our environment.
Bayer and Big Agro are currently waging a misinformation campaign trying to attribute the colony collapses on global warming and mites; although those factors do affect bee populations, studies have proven again and again that neonicks are the #1 killer of bees. Anyone who claims otherwise is either confused or being paid (and Agro’s dropping a fuckton of money on this, like Big Tobacco claiming for decades that cigarettes were harmless - people believe that shit). The Bayer Bee Care Center is one of many arms of this disinformation machine.
I also just discovered that Bayer has launched a “feedthebees” damage control hashtag, and they’re sending packets of wildflowers to anyone who wants one. I have inquired with Bayer as to whether or not those seeds are treated with neonicks, and continue to wait for a response.
Maryland is the first state in the US to try and pass legislation to reduce the use of neonicks, and the bill remains unsigned, right now, on Governor Hogan’s desk. Here are some ways to contact his office if you’d like to encourage him to protect the future of our pollinators.
