1. (tcw) when they are creche-mates, rey finds herself with difficulty sleeping unless margot is somewhere nearby. it was a slow process for rey to warm to, but when she does she cannot let go of it. despite margot’s being a fount of good nature in waking hours, rey is somehow calmed the most by her little friend huddling against her for warmth. it could simply be because someone, anyone is seeking her out. it could even be that someone needs her. no one’s ever needed her before. rey takes her hot water bottle duties very seriously once she puts two and two together and it becomes the veritable highlight of her day. sleep has never come easier.

2.  when they no longer live in close quarters, there are occasions when rey wakes from nightmares with her primary instinct being to reach for margot. it takes years to grow out of it. and she doesn’t even properly grow out of it, but learns instead to gulp back the images and clutch her blanket tighter. as long as her friend is still out there somewhere and rey can feel the warm flicker of her signature, faint though it might be, rey will focus on that to hopefully ease herself back to sleep.

3. (wwii) it becomes rey’s mission to make margot “ugly” laugh as often as possible on the blindingly happy occasions the two end up either stationed in the same location or have time to spend together. rey does occasionally try it when there are soldiers in line for coffee and donuts as a challenge. if margot laughs, the soldiers might smile too, and isn’t that just the point? by and large, it’s more of a personal, quiet goal. rey finds it bouys the spirit trying to keep others afloat with laughter just as much as it does to be the one laughing. in this, her friend becomes a singular focus. 

4. nobody appreciates stale donuts like rey. at the end of the day, if and when she can worm her way over to wherever the dollies are, rey will stick her head through the counter window or the back door to ask if there are any left. but while she does genuienly enjoy old donuts, it’s mostly a joke. those resources are meant for the soldiers and rey isn’t that selfish. though, it’s good for a laugh. if she’s really in the mood to make the dollies roll their eyes, rey will add that margot sent her. in all likelihood margot did not actually do this.

          “ she’s got brains too, y’know that? ever get ‘er goin’ on hist’ry? i could listen to her talk about, ahh, draperies and rena--renaissance fabrics and shit all day. coulda done anything with that university degree she’s got yet here she is, schleppin’ ‘round ol’ pah-ree with us chucklefucks. ”  joe slides a rough hand through his hair before giving in and laying supine in the cool grass, speaking towards the night sky.  “ whatta woman, huh? ”

Pens scribbling upon parchment. Tea for two. The muffled sound of a forgotten tune playing from a distant gramophone. The innocence of puppy-love. Human-like roots kept him grounded (an amalgamation of Mandalorian parts that stemmed from the Great Shadow Crusade; close enough, he knew). The slap forced his face to snap to the side– either she was stronger than she looked or he had not entirely shaken the hibernation sickness– and a rosy pink began to pool beneath the impact, blossoming across his cheek in deeper and darker waves. It stung, but only for a moment, as something like indignation crept up his esophagus. Unaccustomed to this, to someone finding the audacity necessary to assault him-- to regard him in any capacity, really, that was not an order. Khan considered it, considered her, tilted his head with darkened eyes.

While it was in his bones to bite, to gnash teeth like an akk dog on the rampage, he found a semblance of control. Misplaced and unwanted in a new time as well-- perhaps the bitter taste in his mouth kept him complacent. It might occur to him to not insult the woman who had a hand in his resurrection, or whatever deplorable act might resemble it. 

    “Your complaint has been noted.”
