I ART U ! BRING OUT YOUR HISTORY, B.
Last summer I went to Tanzania (Africa) and it looks like it had an impact on the way I picture the city I have now lived in for 5 years in France. I used to love Rennes so much, I still do but I need some change... I am kind of a nomad, always looking for new dynamics and change. For school needs, I had to stay in Rennes for 5 months and those felt like...mmm... I don't want to lie on this, let's say it was just weird and quiet ! There is nothing I hate more than too much of nothingness! Quiet moments are peaceful and ressourcing, but if they last too long one can go crazy! So, I thought I could do something cool in order to deal with the extra-nothingness ! There came the Black History Month exhibition project organised by Dooinit Music.
I am glad and happy to be part of the volunteers on that particular event. As you all know talking about or promoting either African American or African history (culture, arts...) is not very common here. There is very little space for expressing one's opinion on those subjects. This event is probably one of the coolest thing that is changing the dynamics around me here ! I was in charge of finding an artist for the exhibition. I did not have to think twice, I knew who would fit for it and he was eager to fillful the mission ! Christian Gazia is a young talented man who definitely has given a voice to black history on this exhibition. When you look at the artworks of the "B" exhibition, you feel that he did not just compose an order but recalled past and contemporary history. In his work, irony and sarcasm perform together offering a criticism of what the American society has made of black identity through their struggles and successes.
The B exhibition is composed of 12 art pieces, on which he used spray, acrylic and brush on canvas, some are black and white, and others are colored. On this collection, the technics are simple, it is not more about the technic but about the ideas. Gazia's artwork has the capacity to mingle the inner and the outside, to enable everyone to question their relationship to history and society. His ideological approach might make you think of Alexis Peskine, Tom Sanford and few others. Nevertheless, his unicity resides in his belief that "les beaux arts n'ont pas d’écoles" ("fine arts have no schools"), which shows his deep desire and feeling on art being accessible to everyone. B is his first exhibition but watch out this very inspired young man is sharp and creative, it might be the first of many future exhibitions. That's the least I wish for him! Here is a piece of artwork in progress to make you come support!
Everybody who is around here should come and support the Black History Month by Dooinit Music, it's going to be interesting, the program includes discussions with former black panther Kathleen Cleaver and other "to be confirmed" guests. Soon I will post all the details of the event. This is a not to be missed event !
