I’ve been playing the new Doom and while the game itself is tons of fun, I’m really not a fan of the redesigns, they all look samey and like stuff I’ve seen a million times on Artstation. I’m not gonna talk about Cyberdemon because everyone hated that design, but I will mention another one I hated: hell knight based on Doom 3. Unsurprisingly you can’t ruin most Doom 1 designs since they’re pretty terrible.
Now, what I find really cool is that the Doom 3 design seems to incorporate bovine characteristics in subtle ways, such as with the jaw, digitigrade legs and hoof-like claws. Why bovine? Because this was hell knight’s original design in Doom2 (which was merely a recolor of another monster).
The result isn’t an anthropomorphic animal, but a monster that genuinely looks inhuman despite being humanoid. The design also has a good flow to it. For example, the teeth aren’t widely spaced so they wouldn’t break the flow of the head narrowing downwards and the head isn’t neatly divided horizontally into two equally large halves like the new design. This kind of proportional symmetry tends to make designs pretty boring.
Meanwhile the new design is like a box. No interesting shapes whatsoever. The monster looks like a zombiefied Gears of War character because the only thing the concept artist got out of the Doom3 design was “it doesn’t have eyes”. Gone is the flaky bright red part around the mouth, oh no, it needs to be smudged and blurred so it doesn’t draw any immediate attention to the teeth. Speaking of, make the teeth small. We wouldn’t want the design to be threatening. Make sure to mess up the jaw too, otherwise its whiteness might threaten the tyrannical dominance of that nice shiny bald head which is so important. And since you blurred the flaky mouth shape that was subtly shaping the nose, just put a human nose there for no real reason (make sure it’s small and simple so the audience doesn’t think it might be important to a creature without eyes). And without the original nose we don't have a nice lead into the groove separating the head into two halves, but who cares. Put some out-of-place scales on the shoulders because you’ve been watching Michael Bay’s Ninja Turtles apparently and congrats, you’ve ruined a decent design!
Also from a distance I kept mistaking it for possessed soldier. So much for recognisable silhouettes.
