Come Alive Doomriders - 2009
High pitched anxious guitars racing. Nervous twitching feet are anticipating the arrival of what's next. Layers of anxiety piling on as the high-hat adds to the mood. Heavy guitars come smashing through as the song steps it up another gear. Darkness come alive, sing to sleep my soul. When the only thing left to embrace is darkness it offers a sense of comfort. There is nothing else to run from. All that is left is a darkness that will engulf you.
But what’s in the darkness. It scares me. It’s always there watching and waiting. Saying come. I will always welcome you, but death sits waiting for you in this endless black. Not necessarily the actual death of you, but parts of you will die when you welcome me in. I feel scared to open my eyes and look at what is waiting there for me. I know it’s the death of parts of me but the rebirth of others.
Come Alive is the welcoming of that death. But the fear that comes with it. My nightmares will never end. Stuck in this image of a person I have created who is just half a man lacking darkness. My darkness will never end. What nightmares are in the dark scare me more than what is outside in the light so I stay stuck in limbo. Neither welcoming nor rejecting the darkness. But like the singer in Come Alive, I am begging to feel that change inside my soul all while still refusing to welcome in the darkness. For today, I acknowledge that and let this song feed my soul the few scraps it needs to get through the day.
