Dropping this with no context- but basically explains their dynamic.
Wondla OC Headcanons: Eegis the Balance Keeper and her Death Rollers
Eegis, as a Balance-Keeper, guards a number of herds of animals, but her favorites were a colony of Death Rollers (giant rolly pollies) that live in a humid, moist temperate rainforest south of Lake Concors.
The Death Rollers need this humid, moist environment on account of their gills- they're terrestrial crustaceans.
Eegis' sister was flattened when the colony was spooked by a storm. Because it's so difficult to get a new handler to "bond" with the Matriarch, Eegis was chosen for the duty because of her resemblance to her sister, which made the process easier.
Despite this, Eegis never held any ill will towards the Death Rollers- she understood they were just animals that lashed out and her sister was just unfortunate enough to be in the way.
Death Rollers expel a toxic ammonia gas instead of urinating- or occasionally as a defense. Because of this, overexposure to any member of the colony is lethal.
They became endangered because their young and eggs are a delicacy to many different races- especially when boiled. Not only this, but many were captured and used to fertilize potential farmland because of their tendency to eat toxic metals from the soil- and detritus like dead plant and animal matter- amongst other things.
Eegis will sit on top of them sometimes- usually the Matriarch- for a quick snooze or just to enjoy the ride as they crawl around.
She has a favorite besides the Matriarch: it's one with a yellowed section of armor near its head that looks almost like a duck bill. She calls him "Billy".
She makes "imprints" of strange animal, plant, or hybrid specimens she finds- based on the Japanese art of gyotaku (fish printing)- usually as a way of recording new specimens, but also as a method of "trophy collecting"- she has a big book filled with such prints- and Zin has his own copy she sent him.
She despises the Taxidermist. She doesn't respect him- the methods he uses go against the Dorcean's traditional stipulations: make a swift, clean, painless kill- no suffering (though the Taxidermist would argue his methods technically did).
She's the only Sister that has been closest to the Heart; the Balance-Keepers worship the Mother, and they know to stay out of the Heart unless one is completely pure; Eegis respects the Mother, and isn't fool or arrogant enough to think of herself as pure, but she isn't beyond testing boundries.
She does very much enjoy hunting, and taking trophies- but she knows there's a balance that must be respected, and laws that cannot be broken. To disrespect and disobey is death- and for the poachers that disobey the law, she is their death.
She carries a small satchel with her with several kits inside- some of which are filled with implements that resemble entomology tools, and others filled with small books for identification, parchment, dust, and brushes to make imprints of said specimens. Another kit is a first aid kit all Sisters carry.
She also carries tongs to pick up smaller specimens with; she will not touch something with her bare talons unless she knows for certain what it is. This was something she had to learn from experience: once she picked up a new specimen near the Heart, some sort of insect like thing that she couldn't identify, and it stung her, sending her into a bad hallucinated hellscape that lasted for three days; from that point forward, she only touched things she didn't know with tongs.
Her relationship with Besteel developed over time, and in secret. Thankfully being a handler on guard duty means she spends most of her time out with the herds alone, isolated from watchful eyes; Sisters are not allowed to have mates and eyasses.
Eegis really wanted girls. When she was pregnant with her and Besteel's litter, she kept referring to them as female and had female names picked out for them; then they had the audacity to be boys.
She's not that great of a mom. She's barely around, but she does care about her sons.
She only started killing poachers because they were always first to try to kill her; but what was once a means of survival soon to her became sport- it's gotten to the point where instead of asking for identification, warrant, or permits, she'll just immediately start blasting. This has gotten her into some trouble with the leader of the Sisters, Mother Fera (not to be confused with the Mother Spirit- the leader of the Balance Keepers is the eldest female veteran of the corps, who earns the title of "Mother" after years of service as a Sister of the Heart; the title is obviously taken from the Spirit, though).
She actively enjoys hunting the sapient species of Orbona- but her favorite prey are other Dorceans.
New Wondla OC: Eegis
Large female Dorcean, has a vertical streak of light gray fur over each eye and horizontal streaks across her back, almost reminiscent of a tiger.
Always carries a specialized boomrod with her at all times; it has a sort of "muffler" at the end that allows it to shoot hyper-concentrated, nearly silent soundwaves. Good for sneaking up on her prey. (For now still checking for plausibility)
Guards a number of rare, endangered animals from poachers, apart of a group of female warrior Dorceans known as "The Sisters of the Heart" or "The Balance Keepers".
Has a light blue patch on one of her shoulders with a symbol that in the Dorcean language represents balance, with teeth and claws from some of her kills carefully sewed around the hem to keep them from making noise while she hunts. It's the Sister's "uniform"; all who see it both fear and respect it.
Guards endangered animals and contributes to their conservation because she believes that if the populations are not cared for, there will be nothing to hunt; a true Dorcean huntsman should care for the balance instead of only heedlessly taking from it.
An excellent huntress. She actively hunts poachers, and has more than one gruesome trophy in her collection (Besteel admired her for this).
She actually studies animals as well- she's logged several new specimens that recently emerged from the Heart, some activity of the Mother Spirit, and a few unique mutations. Zin loved her work.
She's known as the Sister who has gotten the closest to the Heart of the Forest and the Spirit; but even she has not directly been in the Heart itself.
Besteel used to go to her to capture unique specimens, or to check over the ones he already had to ensure he hadn't caught the same ones to send to Solas.
She hated Redimus because of the menagarie incident; because several of the specimens were extremely rare and critically endangered and she contributed them herself, believing their conservation would continue there, where poachers could not get them; she considers him a poacher because of this, and if she could have his head mounted alongside several of her other trophies, she would.
She considers some kinds of game/trophy hunting a form of balance-keeping; if the population of animals is too large, it's best to weed them out a little.
She and Besteel met because she thought he was a poacher and tried to kill him. However, that encounter...changed swiftly, and afterwards he had an opportunity to explain everything to her. She still made him jump through all the bureaucratic hoops to get a permit, though, much to his chagrin and her amusement.
She easily could have granted him permission to capture live specimens. She just wanted to annoy him.
Besteel was extremely jealous for her, and wouldn't so much as hear of another male visiting her even purely on business; she, in turn, hated to hear of Besteel's many suitresses, though both made a show of bragging to each other about all their "partners" to stir each other up.
In the Besteel Lives AU, he finally settled down with her and they have quadruplets: a bunch of rowdy little beasts that drive their sire crazy (save for one calm little angel).
Redimus' eyas Besteen had a baby crush on Eva Nine when she was little. She clung to Eva often and always wanted to sit in her lap when she was still small enough to. She also would try to "share" her treats (usually by trying to shove them in Eva's mouth). She would ask Eva to marry her, too, and would even get jealous of Hailey being around her (in the cute way a toddler gets jealous for someone, usually pouting and immediately rushing over to get cuddles or kisses too).
In the Besteel Lives AU, her uncle Besteel didn't take very kindly to the idea, and actually tried to keep Besteen away from Eva when he was around (which of course failed miserably because Besteen was DETERMINED to get her daily cuddles from Eva).
As an adult Besteen looks on this time of her life and cringes in embarrassment.
Still working on building this one but basically new Dorcean OC Eegis and her interactions with Besteel in a shellnut:
Besteel: "I need a Dorcean skull and I can't have you ask questions why."
Eegis: "Only if you don't ask why."
Eegis: *takes out seven pristine Dorcean skulls* "Take your pick."
Besteel: "...This one is fine."
Had a headcanon that might turn into a drabble:
Eegis, as the Sister of the Heart closest to the Heart of the Forest, and a documentor of many unique specimens (imprints and studies of which she sent to Zin), was often invited to the palace for basically "tea parties" with him, where they would discuss her conservation efforts and how that related to the museum and the menagerie, amongst other zoological questions. She especially liked to visit to see how the specimens she had donated- as well as those of her "sisters"- were doing.
But really this is a great opportunity just to imagine a big burly Dorcean Amazonian just holding a dainty little tea cup in a talon while sitting in a gazebo in the royal gardens with Zin- and Zin has a special little hat for the occasion PLEASE THE AESTHETICS-
Redimus and Doshika in a shellnut:
(Save Doshika isn't actually angry she just looks scary but she's actually very sweet)
