thank you so much.

Dorianne: What 'back-to-school' means to me
by Dorianne Mamo
It’s that ‘Back to School’ time of the year again, when stationeries flow with hassled parents eager to get the back-to-school shopping list over and done with, and children are still trying to get over the fact that their laissez-faire summer attitude has in fact come to an end. Unless they happen to be the geek I was back at school, some two decades ago.
I remember making the most of my summer holidays; eating buckets of ice-cream, going to the beach and playing (read fighting) with my sister during summer but by mid-summer I would have already had enough of the long days spent away from the classroom. Boring – I know. But that’s the way it has always been for me – a teacher’s pet who enjoyed reading her school text books, preparing herself for the weekly dictations and studying for exams. That is why during the first week of September, when shops would put out their ‘Back to School’ banners, young me would feel in seventh heaven – daydreaming about who my teacher for the year might be, wondering whether I’d be in the same class as my friends and hoping mum would allow me to buy that pencil case I would have been eyeing for ages (as advertised on some Italian TV station)!
And some fifteen days prior to the first day of school, I’d dedicate the whole morning to carefully fill up my pencil case with new pencils, pens and highlighter pens, wash my lunch box for the zillionth time and pester mum to go re-iron my school uniform. By the time the first day of school would arrive I’d be too ecstatic and overwhelmed to actually enjoy it, but by then it didn’t really matter because I would be comforted by the fact that the first school day was going to be followed by tons others and that made me happy! Yep, those were the days!
This article has probably already gave you a good indication of my being a bit weird at times. But I also happen to be a good girl, so watch out for this space – I’ll give you more.
I like to think he survived in order to find me, in order to arrive here, sober, tired from a long night of tongues and hands and thighs, music on the radio, coffee– so he could look up and see me, standing in the kitchen in his torn t-shirt, the hem of it brushing my knees, but I know it’s only luck that brought him here, luck and a love that had nothing to do with me, except that this is what we sometimes get if we live long enough, if we are patient with our lives.
