The Goldfinch movie released at theatres in the U.S. and Canada a couple of days ago (September 13, 2019). Ashleigh Cummings, our beloved Dot, plays Pippa, the main character Theo Decker's unrequited love and obsession.

Ashleigh is having a fantastic year. The supernatural horror drama television series she stars in, NOS4A2, just finished its successful 10 episode run, and it was announced that AMC had renewed the series for a second season. Her character, Vic McQueen, has a supernatural ability and must strive to defeat a twisted villain, Charlie Manx, who feeds off the souls of children. Vic rides her motorcycle everywhere, something Dot has never done. What they do have in common, though, is their bravery to do the right thing.

The Goldfinch is a family drama. I have not read the book yet, but according to Wikipedia, her character in the movie, Pippa, at one point is “enrolled in a school for troubled teens in Switzerland”, quite different from Dot’s good Catholic girl upbringing. In addition to Ashleigh, the movie stars some of my favorite actors, including Nicole Kidman, Jeffrey Wright, and Luke Wilson. I look forward to seeing it.

A fellow MFMM-fan got the job she wanted yesterday, so Lego-Phryne of course threw a big party in her honour. Hugh somehow ended up in my bed. Dot was livid, but he swears he doesn’t know what happened after he drank from the grog Bert and Cec brought. Apparently it had just got in from Queenscliff. And Jack has seemed a bit distraut all day. Was there any phracking going on behind our backs…?

My MFMM Calendars 2018: October

Since Hugo Johnstone-Burt’s birthday is in October, my custom-made calendar (on the right) is dedicated to our Dear Hugh, who possesses the irresistible constabulary charm in the uniform that has so many buttons to undo. Hidden under the heavy police uniform is the incredibly muscular physique showcased in S2E3 Dead Man’s Chest and S2E4 Deadweight. To be honest, I didn’t expect that from the young man with the boyish smile and was pleasantly surprised.

The MFMM official calendar (on the left) happens to be Hugh’s sweetheart, Dot, who is in my favorite outfit of hers. She looks beautiful in the two red gowns (the fashion show at the end of S2E5 Murder a la Mode and the party on SY Ena in S3E7 Game, Set and Murder), but I think this soft, flowy dress is more her style as she looks comfortable and smart. Orange, beige, and brown (Dot’s favorite colors according to Kerry Greenwood in Flying Too High) don’t have to be boring. This ensemble is a perfect example.

Miss Fisher Random Thoughts (307)

Today is the Independence Day in the U.S. What better way to celebrate the spirit of this holiday than to highlight one of the strong and independent women on Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. Under her Miss Phryne’s wings, Dot overcame her fears, expanded her knowledge and skills, and lived up to her potential. She grew from a timid maid to a capable and confident assistant detective in less than a year. What an accomplishment.

This quote of hers is one of my favorites from the show. Whether she decides to keep working after getting married or to stay home and raise three or four children with Hugh, it will be HER choice. Not Hugh’s, the family’s, or the society’s. Miss Fisher shall be very proud of her protege.

Miss Fisher Lady Detective Agency Roster (2)

Dot was originally hired by Miss Fisher as a maid, a lady’s companion. She quickly proved that she was brave, brilliant, reliable, resourceful, and incredibly detail oriented and got promoted to Assistant Detective. The wise Mr. Butler called her Miss Fisher’s “right-hand woman at all hours of the day and night” and Jack the Man of Honor Robinson described her as “a morally upright and intelligent young woman”. Both were great compliments considering the source. And she is pretty too!

p.s. As mentioned yesterday, the address and phone number in the photo were not made up by me. It was printed on Miss Fisher’s business card Eugene Fisher pilfered from the Baron’s suitcase in S3E6 Death at the Grand.
