My MFMM Calendars 2018: October

Since Hugo Johnstone-Burt’s birthday is in October, my custom-made calendar (on the right) is dedicated to our Dear Hugh, who possesses the irresistible constabulary charm in the uniform that has so many buttons to undo. Hidden under the heavy police uniform is the incredibly muscular physique showcased in S2E3 Dead Man’s Chest and S2E4 Deadweight. To be honest, I didn’t expect that from the young man with the boyish smile and was pleasantly surprised.

The MFMM official calendar (on the left) happens to be Hugh’s sweetheart, Dot, who is in my favorite outfit of hers. She looks beautiful in the two red gowns (the fashion show at the end of S2E5 Murder a la Mode and the party on SY Ena in S3E7 Game, Set and Murder), but I think this soft, flowy dress is more her style as she looks comfortable and smart. Orange, beige, and brown (Dot’s favorite colors according to Kerry Greenwood in Flying Too High) don’t have to be boring. This ensemble is a perfect example.

A fellow MFMM-fan got the job she wanted yesterday, so Lego-Phryne of course threw a big party in her honour. Hugh somehow ended up in my bed. Dot was livid, but he swears he doesn’t know what happened after he drank from the grog Bert and Cec brought. Apparently it had just got in from Queenscliff. And Jack has seemed a bit distraut all day. Was there any phracking going on behind our backs…?

Hugh Collins Appreciation.

The movie San Andreas (2015) was on TV a couple of nights ago. Hugo’s character, Ben, was kind, brave, and protective, not unlike our Dear Hugh. He looked dashingly handsome in the modern getup and hair style (major heart eyes). I cracked up a little when he told the girl Blake to “wait, just wait for a minute”. It made me think of Murder on the Ballarat Train when he was running after Miss Fisher and urging her to wait and slow down. San Andreas is making a sequel, but the full cast has not been named yet. I hope Hugo will reprise his role with his adorable on-screen little brother Ollie in tow.

My MFMM Calendars for 2017: November

I usually made my calendars post on the first of the month but missed it earlier due to my hiatus. However, I feel compelled to post it now because I don’t like deviating from routines, not too much anyway. Next month I shall resume normalcy.

Left: The MFMM official calendar this month features Dot and Hugh. This is a scene from S1E6 Ruddy Gore. Hugh couldn’t make the operetta because of a footy match, but when he was called on duty to help investigate the death at the theatre, his first and foremost concern was Dot’s safety. What a sweetheart.

The bottom of the official calendar continues the theme: “Detective Robinson (Nathan Page) relies on the good police work of Constable Hugh Collins (Hugo Johnstone-Burt), who wins the heart and eventually the hand of pretty, sweet, but surprisingly shrewd Dot Williams.” Words like “pretty” or “sweet” are often used to describe Dot, but this is the first time I see “shrewd”. Right on!

Right: My custom-made calendar this month is dedicated to all 10 regular cast members. I used the Shutterfly calendar template to create this compilation, and it’s one of my favorites of all time. Unfortunately, I had trouble duplicating it using other apps, so this may remain the only copy.

Miss Fisher Random Thoughts (312)

Hugh was in his constable uniform most of the time (looking dashing as ever like Miss Fisher said), which made the few occasions that he got to wear street clothes (let it be casual, formal, or athletic) extra special. The irresistible constabulary charm shined through all these attires. Major heart eyes.

Speaking of which, Hugh’s wardrobe collection seemed quite limited. I recon it implied that the Collins struggled financially after his father’s untimely death. We never learned how his single mother supported the family, did we? Did she have a full-time job? If so, I would think that Hugh should not have problem with Dot’s desire of continuing to work after they were married. If Mrs. Collins was not employed, how did they manage? Did they receive help from relatives? I have many questions and theories that are worth exploring but will leave them in the vault for now.

Back to Hugh’s wardrobe. If I am not mistaken, he owned two suits, the grey one that he wore in a few episodes and the black one he wore at his wedding. Under his grey suit, he often wore a light blue vest (e.g. The Green Mill Murder, Murder in Montparnasse) but occasionally a maroon one (e.g. Abbotsford man in Marked for Murder). In terms of his casual style, I love him in the dark green sweater/jumper at the chateau in Murder under the Mistletoe. He outshined his Inspector in that getup, in my opinion. I also adore the multi colored vest he was wearing over an unbuttoned white shirt in the S3 promo video and once dedicated a post to it – Miss Fisher Random Thoughts (241), Hugh and Murray Cod, posted 20-Oct-2016 (link here). Of course, his bathers on the Queenscliff beach (Dead Man’s Chest) and the white undershirt in the boxing ring (Dead Weight) accentuated his incredible physique and were definitely fan favorites.

Today (May 19), the world is watching the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Miss Meghan Markle, which reminded me of the wedding of Dot and Hugh. The ceremony might not have been as majestic and elaborate, but the intimate setting, especially Dot’s farewell speech to Miss Phryne at the end, moved us all to tears.

Although I am not religious, the Wedding Hymn by Sidney Lanier (American musician, poet, and author, 1842 – 1881) feels appropriate for celebrating the nuptials for both couples. Wish them a hundred years of harmonious matrimony (百年好合).
