Stop trying to impress me...
Thought before bed:
In all my conversations about skateboarding with people who don't skateboard i always find that there are 3 main phrases, and weird remarks that only happen when I say to people 'I skateboard'.
People will often say:
'Oh yeah I used to skate when i was like in the 10th grade'
'I could never ride those things, I end up falling on m ass'
'So like can you do tricks and stuff?'
My mental reaction:
'Oh yeah...and I used to do crack when I was a kid' (which is a horrible joke)
'you might say you have no balance yet you learn how to walk as a baby...
'Stop talkin to me as if you know me.'
This is the kind of stuff that skateboarders have to deal with on a regular basis, which probably doesn't happen in other subcultures like say, I don't know breakdancing maybe, nah scratch that, you wouldn't say in a conversation to a child prodigy 'Oh yeah, I paint stuff, it's surrealism sometimes' like why go the extra mile to impress somebody who is better than you when you don't even relate to their expertise.
Basically, remember this,
Just because someone is better at a practice than you are, don't bullshit them in a conversation by talking as if you know stuff. If you don't know anything, ask questions, and maybe you be humbled at what people have to say than just running your mouth about a subject that you don't know anything about...
Also remember that if you are "in competition" with somebody just because they are "better" than you doesn't mean they are better at life altogether. A person may be a professional in whatever field they are in but in reality they are probably just as worried about life more than you are. It's not right to compare your bad season of reality with another person's good season of reality. It's a warped way of thinking about yourself.
Do yourself a favour and WAKE UP!
