Today’s abstract paintings inspired by the photos of crushed strawberries and raspberries. All of them are A1, acrylics and chalk pastels.
I painted all of them before lunch, and was so artistically drained I went home around 1pm. They look much better in real life, the colours are more vibrant and the textures are more visible. I tried my best editing everything on Photoshop but this is as far as I could go. I’m really happy with how the paintings look and will definitely make great background for the collages I will start making this week.
HANGING WEEK - 23.05.18
Today I was able to finalise my order for my finals, I am extremely happy with it as I was able to organise it with the negative events on the top row and the positive on the bottom. This could give an impression of the negative past events overshadowing the positive though isn’t necessary to come across as a focal point. The main goal was ultimately to have the colour balance correct and an even and level spacing on the wall. I used a spirit level and long rulers in order to ensure that each image was in keeping with the layout, from here I first secured them with masking tape before carefully finalising the layout using velcro tape. The good thing about the velcro is that if for some reason I decide I want to change the layout I should be able to move the images fairly easily.
Having my finals hung this early means that I am free to work on my evaluation, sketchbook and other supporting documents for the rest of the week. I only hope that they remain on the wall securely enough.
Development samples|Green Space|26-28 April
So after my trip to Victoria Miro I was full of fresh inspiration and really just wanted to paint. As I was walking home I was stopped by a group of primary school children who were doing a public survey regarding the amount or lack of green space within the city. After talking to them about it, the words green space kept whirling around my head and made me consider the constant construction of buildings, especially flat blocks, are taking up or blocking out clean green space for children and the public.
These are some quick studies I did to try as a way to represent how green space is being taken away in the city.
I used acrylic and ink creating different shades of green. I used black charcoal over the top to create a feeling of darkness encroaching over the fresh green colours.
Prepared surfaces from yesterday. Some of these were created by using excess paint left on the palette/tray so i used paper to print the pattern/paint. I really like how these turned out and plan on drawing over some of them to add more layers.
Working on trying to finalise how I’ll put my wee part of the exhibition together….
I printed out all 230 of my photographs on cheap printer paper just to see how much room it would take up if I were to wallpaper the whole darkroom /camera obscura.
I definitely think I want to build the images around the aperture of the camera obscura itself rather than a straight wallpapering of the box. What do you think?
Some first attempts at screen printing… I’m not using any registration, so just eyeballing the second layers… I’m not so sure I like the ones with the text, but it was just a test, so that’s okay.
PS: The lines over my face in the prints of me are intentional. The halftone screen was made from a multiple exposure photograph that I took of myself in March.
