Everyone knew you as the hyper-independent, no-nonsense friend. You were serious about your education, graduating top of your class with a degree in Molecular Biology, and now working through your PhD. You had your version of fun, which meant watching whatever your comfort show was on repeat or reading for long periods on the couch.
You never really dated, and your friends would call you the chronically single friend if you were actively trying to date. but the entirety of the time your friends knew you, you had never dated. And sure, you were busy, but sometimes they didn't know if you were genuinely uninterested in the matter, scared shitless, or completely blind to the number of guys begging for your attention. You were somehow a combination of all three.
As you sat with your friends on the quad, you listened to them rattle off their plans for tonight as you finished reading a chapter of your book. "You should really come with us," one of your friends said, flashing you a knowing smile. You didn't look up until you placed your bookmark in your book, closing it and laying it down in your lap. "It's the first time I've had a weekend off from work in over a month. And I plan on rotting in my bed." Your friends groaned, rolling their eyes.
"Exactly, it's your first weekend off in months. It's Friday night, you should come out with us." They were begging you like they did every week; sometimes you felt bad, continuously saying no to them, and would cave. But you were exhausted after midterms and just wanted some quiet time to yourself.
And right as you were opening your mouth to rebut the argument your friends were making, your friends cheered like the answer to their prayers had finally arrived. "Yes! Thank God! Grace, please convince our dear friend here that she needs to live a little and come out with us this weekend." You rolled your eyes as he plopped down in the grass next to you.
Ryland Grace became one of your best friends when you were in undergrad. He was also a Molecular Biology major with big hopes and extremely driven. While almost everyone else thought he was a smug dick who wanted to prove how much better than everyone he was, which was true, he was also equally a great and caring friend, once you made it past all his walls. All it took was one group project from hell that bonded you two together during your first semester, and you guys became inseparable.
"You're not coming tonight," a little disappointment laced in his voice, as he looked at you. "Don't give me that look, Ryland. I already made up my mind." You crossed your arms, trying to avoid his stupid puppy-dog look. "But we haven't all gone out in sooo looong." He bumps his shoulder into yours, and your friends snicker at you and Ryland's almost mirrored look. Both of you are ridiculously close to each other, staring at each other over your glasses. Except you're looking at him with your signature look of annoyance, and he is smirking at you knowingly, because he's about to win this battle with the next couple of lines out of his mouth.
"C'mon, I've missed not having you around. Please?" His voice softens in the way it only seems to do with you, and he knows it's working. "I'll take you to Moe's tomorrow if you come." He intoned, and he practically watched your armor crack. He knew how much you loved Moe’s. It was a 4 story bookstore that you could spend hours browsing in. You usually went alone because it was hard to convince anyone to stay there with you for too long.
Your whole body turns towards him, and your friends are enjoying watching the show. "But you can't rush me, even if we are there all day." You say, attitude not faltering even though, as always, you're giving in to what he wants. "I'll do you one better. I'll pay for whatever books you leave there with." You scoff, fist out for him to bump, "Okay, deal." In unison, you both turn around to face your friends, and his arm snakes around your shoulders, pulling you closer to him.
"You're welcome, ladies," he gloats, and they roll their eyes. "It's not fair. We would've bribed her with books, too, had you not done it first."
"Well, you snooze, you lose.”
“Whatever just admit he’s your favorite.” your friend fake pouts.
Your friends had always insinuated there was something else between you and Grace. You two did everything together. Study, eat lunch in between classes, he would sometimes come visit you at your job and bring you coffee if you asked. You two were comfortable in each other’s spaces. Touching each other, sharing food, all strict boundaries that you typically had with other people were just nonexistent towards him. And while you argued it was because he knew you better than anyone, the chemistry between you guys was undeniable.
You push him off of you, grabbing your stuff. "And on that note, I gotta get to class." You lift yourself from the ground, slinging your bag on one shoulder and walking away, and before you know it, Ryland is tripping over his own feet to get up, "I'll walk ya." And your friends laugh and think you're both idiots as they watch him jog up to you. He peels your bag off your shoulder, sling it over his own. He smiles at like you created the stars as you begin talking to him about all the books you’ll be looking for tomorrow.
