In how many shows do the love interests get integrated into the main plot with complex issues and storylines entirely of their own? Especially in a show where love interests often switch from one episode to the next because all of the main cast are messy adults sleeping around and trying to suppress their issues?
I feel like any other show would've put a two-dimensional character in Azel's place, and yet they're not just annoyingly perfect or self-absorbed or simply too casual for Klak's liking, they themselves are also a somewhat dysfunctional adult who struggles to keep things casual even when that is what they want and continuously let protocol, self-preservation and their beliefs about the importance of talent and career get in the way of truly doing the right thing. And all things considered, in the end they still care for Klak enough to be willing to risk everything to save them, and yet reputation remains an issue for them after that. They keep coming back to their own issues with their own plots and journeys despite the general conventions for a "bad idea ex" type character like them being so much more one-note than this.
And spoilers for season 2 but despite being by all means a perfect match for Klak, Zypha is herself a mess too, dating other people casually seemingly to try and get over a person she performed one (1) surgery with (which clearly failed), having sustained issues about the literal death cult she grew up in, and taking someone on a 20 hour first date without any warning. The woman is a match to Klak because she matches her issues.
And that's not even mentioning the clear platonic partnership/best friendship between Klak and Sleech that rings through everything they do and comes with its own complications and speed bumps, where they both balance each other out and regularly drive each other mad
