Damn just the font triggers me now
As you can see I’ve jumped onto the Witch Hat Atelier train. Like everyone else I’m having a perfectly lovely time.
Aside from picking up another new manga series before finishing the other ones I’ve started I also listened to Wyrd Sisters by Terry Pratchett! I believe I rated it 4 stars which I know seems like sacrilege when talking about a Pratchett book, but this one had a few pacing issues and just didn’t grab me like the previous Discworld books have. I’m excited to keep checking them out here & there to sort of break up my book bingo tbr.
My top read of the month was definitely Bury Your Gays, which I went in depth with in a previous post.
Rewatching Breaking Bad all these years later is kind of a bummer because now I’m mature enough to realize that this show has one single flaw, but it’s large enough that it might possibly be show ruining for me…..
….And that flaw is that Kim Wexler isn’t there
And this afternoon I finished Chuck Tingle’s Bury Your Gays thanks to a slower than expected day at work. This was another one of those books that just feels tailor made for you. I’ve always enjoyed the “writer’s monsters come to life to haunt them” plot (is there a trope name for this?) and Tingle did a great job of updating it for the 2020s.
This was my first Chuck Tingle book, but I do really want to check out some of his other writing, maybe even some of his self published works.
This was my second audiobook for the bingo and I strongly recommend the audio experience for this book. Andre Santana was fantastic as the primary narrator, but as a huge speculative fiction fan, it was so cool to hear all the little author cameos sprinkled throughout the recording.
Landlocked In Foreign Skin by Drew Huff took care of the self published square for me this month! I really enjoyed this book and would like to check out more from this author.
I found this book through The Locked Tomb fandom and it helped to fill the void that is waiting for Alecto if even for a short while. Huff may have been inspired by Muir, I’m not sure, but I also think this story stands very well as it’s own creation and can be enjoyed by anyone who is a fan of the disturbing and grotesque. As soon as the weather gets warm I’m always in the mood for weird and disgusting literature, and this definitely fit the bill!
i feel like people aren't getting how dire ai is. we are running out of drinkable water. our brains aren't engaging as much with what we see and hear. people near data centers don't get clean water and experience electricity blackouts. it's being used to make pornography of underaged people and women. it often just lies. it affirms everything. it lies. it has made people kill themselves. it lies for gods sake. and people act as if im dramatic for being staunchly against it. 'now i KNOOW you hate ai and whatever, but look at this cute video' this isn't me being a new age puritan about internet videos, this is about the fucking earth and our future living on this planet. people are suffering now, people will suffer more, and my friends and parents will roll their eyes and think im annoying for despising ai so explicitly. we need to wake up because we cannot live like this

Please keep interacting with this post because when I come to tumblr to procrastinate, this shows up again in my notifications and guilts me into writing again

So what this DOESN’T show are the two different books I started and got fairly into in the middle of the month but then put down because work got crazy again.
Also I’m watching Better Call Saul for the first time…
I’ve started my cultural nonfiction and my independently published picks for book bingo and it’s my personal goal to have them both finished before the end of the month!
Thought I'd try a little miniature tribute to the amazing, inspiring artist Ralph McQuarrie, I've always loved his work and thought I'd tackle an illustration he did for Empire Strikes Back and replicate it using figures, practical effects, miniatures, lighting, cotton wool for snow and some serious perspective cheats
The Luminous Fairies and Mothra is my pick for the not originally published in English square. Though only the first 44 pages of this book are the novella, I also found the historic analysis by translator Jeffrey Angles interesting. I’d suggest this book specifically to Godzilla/kaiju fans. Brief and odd as it is, this book is a great little piece of both literary and movie history.
