Since Malato's name rhymes with an Italian dessert, what a perfect way to blueberry him! However, now is the question, how can he go around fighting crime when he can't even move? Seems the poor plague doctor needs some curing himself!
Gonna be honest, I don't feel this is one of my more better pictures but I wanted to do another Malato pic, it has been a year since I have and that's not right. I want to draw more of this guy, I really like him a lot.
One of the most effective ways of making sure that undead can't come back again is to destroy the body completely. Acid is a pretty effective way of destroying the entire body, like stomach acid. That's where Malato's job comes in.
He's great at disposing large hordes however, that kinda just turns him into a garbage disposal for the undead. How he dreads that, it kinda makes him a bit incapacitated. But hey he is saving the city so he's doing good work as a new superhero!
Perfect month to introduce a new character! Idk why I liked the concept of this but I guess going into forensics I wanted a medical character. He came out of discussions with IronBlue on FA of wanting make a superhero character and out came this guy! He even is my character in my first DnD campaign. So I figured I'll give info on him for both him generally and his DnD counterpart. Thanks to IronBlue and Lycanthropy10 for helping me make him! :)

Dr. Malato before was just a simple museum worker, who didn't have any friends or hobbies. Very much a loner. However one night, while staying after closing to help set up for an exhibit on the Italian Plague. Upon setting up, it included setting up some plague doctor costumes. The museum got a very special unmarked package from specifically Poveglia Island in Venice of a special leather doctor's mask.
Because he was curious, and had a love of the history of the plague doctors, this museum worker wanted to try on an authentic mask and costume. So he decided to quickly try on a suit and put on the special mask, not realizing it would transform him and the mask would fuse to become his new face. Upon wearing this mask, he was granted strange powers of necromancy. He could raise and control the dead, even stave them off. As well, he had magical healing, a large knowledge of medicine and alchemy and some strong resistance to diseases. And so he became Dr. Malato Buonaria.
He joined a superhero league with Kayoss and Amphiballoon (two of lycanthropy10's characters, he’s on FA) as the healer and counter-necromancer. With his powers, he is a foil to New Salem's many evil necromancers and disease spreaders. His knowledge of medicine makes invaluable to stopping magical sicknesses and hordes of undead.
He's also a necrophage, meaning he eats undead, which is often how he diseases of ghouls and wraiths -he uses his magic to takes them away from evil controls and then devour them to destroy them permanently. Because he has an iron stomach he is at no risk of getting sick from eating undead at all.
While very resilient to disease, smart and an effective fighter, he does have a lot of weaknesses. For one, he is very sensitive, and doesn't take insults well; he also doesn't know how to take compliments well either because he never gets them. He's also fairly socially awkward and the fact that he is fairly scary looking doesn't help that at all. He also tends to speak verbosely, and that may put off people as well.
Pathfinder Campaign (run by IronBlue)
Currently, Dr. Malato is a Level 2 Cleric so he's still pretty squishy (in more ways than one). He's Lawful Good and a worshipper of Delorm, the god of plague doctors and good undead (a god I made up ;) ). So far he's been pretty reserved but he's proven that he's very nervous about getting in trouble with the law. He is from the city of Otwinax, a city of magic, learning, art and also undead which is perfect for someone like him who deals with undead often.
Hope you guys like him! Ask me any questions you have about him or tell me if you like him or not :)
Finally got back Photoshop! I was able to get a cracked version to work which I am glad I was able to, although I am not holding my breath in that everything is fine now. But for now it seems fine so that's good.
Wanted to get something up this month and since everything else would take too long, I figured I could at least do something simple. And Malato needs a superhero logo!
Quick info about what it's based on:
- the asterisk shape is from the Star of Life, which is a common symbol of emergency medical services
- the cane with the leech around it is from the Rod of Asclepius, an ancient symbol of healing. Normally it's a wooden staff with a snake, but the staff is replaced with Malato's cane, and the snake is replaced with a leech because plague doctors historically did bloodletting with leeches
