what if... dr martinez character development
Imagine: You are a young veterinary education graduate with student debt. You get a promising contract with a private organization that pays incredibly well and has connections to multiple governments, which would give you opportunities galore for the future. It specializes in genetic studies, a subject that you’re quite interested in. It’s a bit sketchy and doesn’t have a board of ethics, but it pays very well and everyone tells you you’re doing the right thing. Eventually you volunteer an egg to science to see how a genetically modified human would function. It goes well, and a healthy bird-kid is brought into the world. And is treated as a test subject rather than a human, because technically she’s not human. And whoops, your contract’s up, and we can bury you under lawsuits if you talk to anyone about this, so go back home.
You move to Arizona and decide to forget about the whole ordeal, so you settle a private vet’s practice with a college friend of yours, have a beautiful, fully-human child that you love. You feel bad for the bird-child that’s technically yours, and you quietly keep track of how old she is, but you also know that you can’t exactly do anything about it because you are a vet and the organization you were working for has its hands in so many government’s pockets, so mostly you ignore the guilt and move on with your life.
One day a bird-child that looks almost exactly like you shows up at your door, bleeding heavily and looking for shelter. Turns out she has no idea who you are or what you’ve done.
Every day Dr. Valencia Martinez wakes up—
Maximum Ride out of context
Not controversial but I’m really mad that Ella and Dr Martinez and Jeb (?) all got killed off screen and had like. One sentence about the caves flooding and that was it. Like ???? Oh my god James. That and I’m incredibly mad that Gazzy’s entire character was one big fart joke :/
MOOD. and after all that emotional shit about max finally finding her "real family" :// ella and dr. martinez just died off page and no one was upset about it, and jeb turned out to be evil (FINALLY) and he died on-page but it was still bad.
and gazzy deserved better
Can we establish a real-life Coalition to Stop the Madness? Because right now we really need it.
OMG I have a theory
I don’t really believe it but technically it’s possible so bear with me.
So remember the Director? Looks like Max, a hundred years old, leader of a worldwide genocidal movement? She told Max that she was Max’s mother. That was later (not much later, but like, three MR-length chapters later) disproved when Jeb tells Max that Dr. Martinez is her mom and he is her father.
Well as much as I love that Dr. Martinez is her mother in canon, it would kinda make more sense for her to be a clone of the Director, wouldn’t it? If the Director really was spliced with some tortoise to be practically immortal, then the School would already have some of her DNA lying around. It would be easy enough (ha! the science part of me scoffs) to just use that to make another hybrid, especially since that particular DNA had proven to splice well. Also, Max looks like her and shares a few personality traits: ambition, natural leader, manipulative, etc. Maya would also have been easy enough to make from that same DNA soup. Easier than having to steal Max and take it from her already-developed self.
[Ultra-deep conspiracy: all three of them are clones from some poor sap who died a hundred years ago]
So why did Jeb tell Max that he and Dr. Martinez were her parents?
Max is repeatedly told she was the first successful avian hybrid, so we can surmise there were other unsuccessful avian hybrids. That’s a lot of -ahem- DNA to gather from donors and mix up in test tubes, because they wouldn’t reuse DNA that proved not to splice well. They couldn’t just have a bunch of avian hybrid clones like Max, because they wouldn’t be able to naturally procreate, which we know they wanted to happen as evidenced by DYLAN (ew gross why.) If we can assume that Jeb knew he and Dr. Martinez were the parents of one of the earliest successful avian hybrids, there is only one explanation:
Fang.
And bam! Plothole filled! Also, Fang’s description more closely fits what we would expect from a hispanic heritage: dark eyes, black hair, olive-toned skin (which is a totally vague description have you ever seen olives?). And Max even points out after the Big Reveal that she doesn’t look much like Dr. Martinez. (“Except for your eyes!” Jeb said gleefully.)
whatever the whole point of the series is that family isn’t determined by blood anyway so ignore this

y’know, for how much Dr. Martinez was portrayed as the “cool mom,” I can’t believe she would just let the flock call her Dr. Martinez. like at some point she’d definitely say “oh you can call me Valencia, we’re not very formal in this house.” right?
