I have reached the point of 100% believing Bolaire about Thjazi’s treatment of him. If anything I think he was downplaying it until the previous episode, because Thimble (#1 Thjazi supporter) protested his words and his snark, but never ONCE in the convergence tried to say he was lying about his interpersonal relationship with Thjazi. Her complaints were, like Hal’s, asking he drop the issue, not saying he was incorrect— which she would definitely do if she had any inkling that what he was saying is wrong.
And with that, plus how the majority of the party was very quick to tell Bolaire to move on and quit bringing up his dehumanization at the hands of Thjazi, I think this has had the unintended side effect of making me think that there’s a larger possibility that whatever makes Julien hate Thjazi actually has grounds in something less petty. Because we have:
Bolaire: hated Thjazi for dehumanizing him, calling him a thing, and forcing him under threat to violate his moral code (whatever that code may be). Promptly told to quit bringing it up despite it now having very real, current consequences, and having a visible breakdown.
Vaelus: antagonistic towards Thjazi for sealing an artifact of her dying order to use in a ritual they had no knowledge or say in. After she then willingly gave it up, she was told that the sisters weren’t doing anything with the artifact, and it’s serving a better purpose now. Like that makes it okay they weren’t consulted on the use of a holy relic.
Julien: hated this guy for over a decade after the falconer’s rebellion to the point that his father and liege lady are not sure why he’s so vehement about it. We know something went down in the Falconer’s Rebellion went down that he’s lying about.
We also know that, much like Bolaire, Julien has been surrounded by most of his life by people who loved Thjazi. His liege Lady and his father, both of which have power over him, still consider him a good person despite the estrangement. His current party, as evidenced by Bolaire, will not believe someone saying verbatim “Thjazi objectified me”, and hear Thimble pretty much go “yeah Thjazi did that”, or at least won’t take it seriously. So it raises the question of if Julien is actually beefing with a guy for a decade straight for petty reasons, or if Raymond and Aranessa, much like the current party, decided that their good memory of Thjazi was more important than Julien’s anger.
So at the very least, it wouldn’t surprise me if Thjazi either did something during the Falconer’s Rebellion, or treated Julien poorly before the Falconer’s rebellion, and he came to the conclusion that no-one would believe him. So there’s no point in trying to justify himself, then or now.
