Alternate Universe Rec List: 00Q

Some of my favorite Alternate Universe fics, in no particular order:

USS Skyfall,  (self rec) The Star Trek AU you didn't know you needed in your life! Rewrite of Skyfall, and a reimagining of current and classic Bond characters.

Denominations, by WriteThroughTheNight This is a fabulous AU in which Q is an Empath and a BAMF. The characterization is so good here, and the relationships between Q and his coworkers and agents are awesome.

Redamancy, by @opalescentgold Soulmate AU with all the feels and shows a lifetime of 00Q together. Excellent longfic, perfect for a cup of tea and a rainy Sunday

Lovely Thorns and Singing Vultures, by @opalescentgold Addams Family AU, in which Q is an Addams. This is just melodramatic perfection and always makes me happy to read. 

Firewall, by Macx In which Bond is a dangerous phoenix gifted with powers of rebirth and regeneration and Q is a technopath, and the two of them together balance each other's supernatural abilities. This is probably one of my favorite BAMF 00Q series, period. Later on, it crosses over with Person of Interest as well.

Bond Fic Rec List: Ghost Stories

 -Conjurings by Midrashic

This is actually a two-part series, and imho is the crème de la crème of Occult October fics. Although the Conjuring movies scare the daylights out of me, these two AU fics are fascinating, with top-notch writing.

 -The Haunting of Skyfall Lodge by BootsnBlossoms & Kryptaria

I'm a sucker for a really good ghost story and this one is fantastic. It is a really neat paranormal reworking of Skyfall, with ghost hunter Q meeting the lonely Bond, who has been haunting Skyfall for decades.

 -The Seer Chronicles  (self rec)

Ongoing series, in which Q is a Seer and Bond is slightly psychic. Banter, rewrites of Skyfall, developing relationship, gleeful poltergeisting of certain characters, 00Q.

 -Phantom by AtotheBean

This is such a good mystery/thriller/ghost story all wrapped in one and the relationship between Bond and Q is excellent. I love a story where Bond and Q are presented as formidable equals, and this fic really delivers.

Strawberry (Field's) Mint Moscow Mule

Note: Definitely make sure to muddle well. Actually if you have the time and ability, sticking everything in a blender and making a bit of a smoothie isn’t a bad idea; it’ll keep you from drinking globs of strawberry and mint, globs which I did not enjoy during the recipe test. :D

Pot Roast of Beef

Bond might eat all manner of expensive and exciting foods while out in the field, but what about when he’s home? Pot roast is something of a British pub staple (and is a delicious Sunday dinner, or if it’s cold and raining, which let’s face it--is Britain ever not cold and rainy? Rhetorical question.)

Here is an easy, no-fuss pot roast recipe that uses a slow cooker. It can be thrown together in the morning, and be ready to eat when you get home from work. 

                            Pot Roast of Beef (Slow cooker)

Ingredients:

1 beef pot roast, ~ 2 lbs (Adjust size to your family req.)

1  cup beef broth

2 cloves garlic, smooshed and chopped

2-3 springs fresh rosemary

2-3 sprigs fresh thyme

2-3 leaves fresh sage

Salt and pepper to taste

1 rutabaga, peeled and chunked

4 carrots, peeled and chunked

2 parsnips, peeled and chunked

1 onion, sliced into rings

  Instructions:

1.  Slice onion and place the rings in the bottom of the slow cooker. This will keep the roast from sticking/burning to the bottom

2.  Place roast on top of onions

3.  Add all other ingredients, arranging the vegetables and herbs on and around the roast. Bruise the herbs a bit to help them release their flavors and oils.

4.  Cook on Low all day

  Notes:

1.  I use fresh herbs because I have access to a garden. Dried works just as well. Adjust to taste.

2.  If you want to skip the mashed potatoes, you can take a few medium-sized red potatoes (or whatever’s on sale) scrub them good, chunk them, and add them to the rest of the vegetables. 

  Serve with mashed potatoes and gravy made from the roast drippings, some crusty French bread, and a side salad.

Headcanon #1

Prompt: Frame

Moneypenny wanted to be a photographer since she was a kid. It started when her mom got her one of those cheap disposable polaroid cameras one summer when Eve was 10. She was supposed to take it with her to summer camp and document her friends and activities. Typical kid stuff.

She was enchanted. She took pictures of everything. In fact, she would later boast to Q (after three margaritas), that she was sure that she invented annoying food pictures. Needless to say, the first attempts were pretty awful. Her finger appeared in at least half of them.

At school, she enrolled in an elective for photography, and suddenly her world expanded. She learned how to look at things, to judge light and angles, and how to frame a picture so it would tell a story. When she ended up as an agent for MI6, her hobby became an asset. She was ace at surveillance—not only did she get the pictures they needed, but she got them with style. They weren’t just seedy evidences of corruption, they were art. And, barring the unfortunate incident with Bond and the train, it helped make her a pretty great sniper, too.

Being able to frame a photo also clued Moneypenny into the quiet relationship between Bond and Q much quicker than anyone else. There was a moment when she caught them in Q’s underground office, both bent over something Bond brought back from his mission. Q’s glasses looked as opaque as an anime character’s while he cautiously poked at the object with a pencil. The harsh overhead lights lit Bond’s blue eyes as he grinned in obvious delight at Q’s consternation. One hand rested idly on Q’s back. The moment was so natural, and so quintessentially them, that Moneypenny snapped a pic with her phone before announcing her presence.

It was a shame she couldn’t keep it (security reasons), because it was a beautiful photo.
