The sailor puts down the mop with an exasperatedsigh. He rubs a dirty hand over hissweaty forehead, utterly tired and ready for a refreshing serving of rum andfruits. His stomach rumbles at the thought and he places his palm over histummy as if he could somehow calm down his hunger. Mitch knows he’s not gettingbut a short ration of dry cookies and a glass of water.

A bitter look is sent towards the stairs thatlead to below the deck. He can hear thunderous laughter of the rest of the crewand Mitch tries not to resent them all for treating him so poorly. Maybe it’snot their fault, after all. Seamen were always superstitious – or wonderfulliars, Mitch can never decide – spreading myths and stories in each port theyfind. A strong belief of theirs is that women bring bad luck. Naturally, Mitchnever imagined this would be a problem for him but many of the sailors insistedthat his pretty face would bring the crew’s demise sooner or later. Maybe it’shis fault for having such a confusing face.

He feels no urge to join his crew and to heartheir provocations, so he decides to sit by the bow of the ship. Mitch closeshis eyes, relishing the salty breeze. It’s been weeks since he stopped becomingpathetically ill on board and now he can finally appreciate the beauty of theopen sea by night.

The moon is just a slice of silver againstblack and even though the several constellations try, none of them can provideenough light to the night. They still reflect on the dark waters, nevertheless,making the sea look a lot like a troubled version of the sky. It’s so beautifulMitch almost feels glad he was pressured to become a sailor. Almost.

When he was just an ordinary boy with dreamsthat were too big for his little coastal village, Mitch had two passions. Thefirst one was the beautiful and mysterious sea. The second one was music. Heenjoyed playing and singing and many said he was quite good at it. Mitch wasforbidden to sing while in the ship, however. The captain told him it would startlethe rest of the crew – “sounds too much like the call of a siren”, the captainexplained and though Mitch’s instinct was to scoff, he only nodded.

Regardless of his prohibition, Mitch startshumming now. Humming is no singing, he thinks, convincing himself that he isn’tbreaking any rules. He isn’t humming to any known song from back home, makingup a tune with the waves and the creaking of wood as his background.

He isn’t sure of when it started, but at somepoint, Mitch realizes that his not the only one humming to the strange melody. Thesweet sound immediately comes to a halt and the sailor looks around, but he isclearly alone in the ship. He blinks, even more confused now, thinking thatmaybe the hot sun he was under the whole day had made him feverish, bringinghim hallucinations.

Mitch is positive he is going crazy when the hummingresumes and despite the circumstances, the low rumble is strangely reassuring.It makes him even more curious and his eyes search the space around him for thesource of this odd melody.

And when he does, he gasps. His first urge isto scream to all to listen, “man overboard!”, but the humming grows louder andinsistent, stopping him. Mitch understands quickly that the person who sings tohim is no man, though he looks a lot like a man. The creature’s face raisesfrom where it was sheltered by the dark waters and Mitch can’t look away.

The man creature is possibly the most beautifulperson he’s ever seen. His skin is pale and looks even icy against the oceanbut the sight of it makes Mitch’s fingers tingle he wants to touch it so bad. Hisjaw is hidden by a thick beard which also surround lips that Mitch is sureshould be purple because of the water’s temperature. However, the creature didn’tseem cold or uncomfortable in the least. He had dark brown curly hair thatfloated beautifully around his shoulders. But what really strikes Mitch is thecreature’s eyes.

A droplet of water rests against long eyelashesthat adorn intense green eyes. But saying those eyes are green is terribly insufficient.They are of the same shade of the sea around Mitch’s ship and they make thesailor wonder if they are made of the same turbulent and mysterious waters. Itwouldn’t surprise Mitch too much, seeing how the sea and this creature seem tobe beautifully intertwined.

His eyes are as alluring as the song and beforeMitch realizes, he is leaning in against the railing of the ship, his bodyassuming a more precarious position by the second.

“What are you?” He breathes and the creaturesmiles, a flashing of white teeth that makes Mitch shiver – and not in a verypleasurable way. He thinks that the song confuses his senses because the sailoris sure he should feel afraid by now. He is sure that he is supposed to run andstay away from danger, but he can’t force his feet to move or gaze away fromthe eyes made of ocean.

“A friend.” The creature answers as if it’sobvious and Mitch shakes his head, numbly.

“You cannot be a friend.” He argues. “I do notknow your face and never heard your name.”

The sea man smiles and amusement flickers onhis eyes. “You know my face now. You have been staring at it for a while.”Mitch feels pathetic for having a blush arising on his cheeks. He neverexpected the creature to address his blatant stare. “And I am called Avriel.”

Mitch nods, repeating the name on his mind. Heis pretty sure he won’t forget, but he does the exercise nevertheless. Theyfall silent again and Avriel sings low and beautiful, making Mitch lean infurther on the edge of the ship, as if trying to get closer to the gorgeoussound.

“I came to help.” The creature says after awhile.

“Whatever you can help me with?” Mitch askscuriously and his eyebrow is arched high.

“You are miserable in here, Mitchell.” He goeson and the sailor vaguely wonders how the creature knows his name. “We do not appreciatesadness on our waters, so you should come with me. I will show you a world thatunites both of your passions. Sea and song – it’s all yours. No mourning overfamily and friends that were left behind. No unreasonable crew mates anddisgusting rations.”

“And what is the price?” He asks. The sailorknows he should be wary. He knows he should be skeptical of every word thecreature said, but he can’t help to be completely at his mercy.

“You have to jump.” Avriel says. “Sea and song,Mitchell. Jump, I will hold you.”

The sailor hesitates. His knuckles become whiteagainst the dark wood and as soon as Avriel sings again, Mitch knows that he can’tresist his pull. What kind of distorted irony, of his voice being considered asiren call and him falling for one, he thinks briefly in a short moment ofconsciousness.

He doesn’t even strip of his clothes, justpulls his body up and then forward, lunging towards the dark waters and thearms of a dangerous creature.
