Beginnings of a Tuber
I never started out to become a youtuber as such. It was never a goal or a dream.ย
It seems to have been a natural evolution based on my work as IT and Artistic trainer.
Yes, you read that right, I have a strong background in art and design, yet in the late 90's and early 2000's found those skills being translated into a digital format and as I was learning exactly how to do that, I would often share the journey with colleagues.
It soon came to light that I had a gift for translating complex systems and ideas into different "audience languages". A small example of this was when I was running courses on HTML programming for use in email news letters. It was aimed at marketing administrators, which at the time and now pardon my generalisation was not the most technical of people.
Anyway ย I digress... Just know I took the road before me and followed any interesting path that came my way. I gathered a lot of knowledge across a large interest field. Yet never truly mastered any.
If you ask "what is the grand plan or goal of your life?" I would say it is to be a film maker. I have a number of shortfilms under my belt, a number if IMDB credits and even sold a short film to a horror anthology.
so this inevitably led to YouTube. At first I used it as a platform to host my shortfilms and corporate films.
Later with the birth of my first son and the resulting yearly birthday cakes that involved I started posting videos of how I made his cakes. This was my first real taste of "success" and up to the point that the first video hit 100k views, it was not something i ever thought about.ย
Then came Minecraft...
Rarely did a game enthral me as it had and I played it for a very long time. Gave up for a few weeks then went back when a new release came out.
In 2012 was playing on TozaTops fan server, just building in survival and such when he stumbled across my building and did a brief tour on it.ย
As he only did a short tour I then decided to make my first ever minecraft related video.
It was bad, the audio was terrible, I was so self conscious and the quality was truly horrific. I made a few other building tutorials but tehy were horrible.
That same month I was talking to a friend who asked me how he can set up a server for his kids and their friends.
I ended up making the server for them but found bukkit and plugins a terrible annoyance and I started looking at ways to do things in vanilla minecraft.
I found a clever way to do an area protect, made a video on it which didn't exactly go viral but brought in my first 100 subs.ย
Then minecon 2012 happened.
I sat in the audience at each panel thinking that, that's what I want... I want to be up there sharing the experience.ย
I became very focused and started building anything i found challenging or interesting.ย
When scoreboards came out, people had issues grasping the concepts and I went into translate mode. I made the series of scoreboard tutorials that for months had sub 100 views.. then BAM...
1.6.4 happened and it all changed for me, suddenly I started getting massive hits and questions and messages.
I responded to each and everyone and slowly started building up a following.
I wont say I a "formula" but If i did it would be that I try to teach others how to use the latest commands and from time to time when I feel I have nothing to teach I will indulge in some inventions.
Through this all I never aimed to be a "YouTuber" it didnt matter to me if i succeeded or not. I was and still am having fun with a fun game. I am still enjoying sharing the knowledge and the amazing things others make.
Yes not all my content is original. But that has never been the point, the point has always been to share, to teach, to inspire.... At Minecon 2013 a dream came true and I sat up there, as a panelist sharing and talking about Minecraft. It was an eye opener and a learning experience. BUT that is a blog for another day.
and here I am today... I feel no diffrent than a year ago, or the year before that... and im having even more fun playing and making videos than ever before...
... and that is all I can ask for.
