Goodbye, Dragon Inn, Tsai Ming-Liang, 2003
Have you seen Dragon Inn (1967)?
Yes
No
Haven’t even heard of this movie
i. Dragon Inn, King Hu, 1967 ii. A Touch of Zen, King Hu, 1971
One of King Hu's most notable contributions to martial arts cinema was his emphasis on the archetype of the female warrior.
Chun Shih as 'Xiao Shaozi' and Miao Tien as 'Pi Shao Tung' in 'Dragon Inn' (1966) directed by King Hu Chun Shih and Miao Tien in 'Goodbye, Dragon Inn' (2003) directed by Tsai Ming-Liang
Jade (Maggie Cheung) and Yau Mo-yan (Brigette Lin) battle the powerful and villainous Tsao Siu-yan (Donnie Yen, in one of his rare roles as a villain) in New Dragon Gate Inn (1992), aka Dragon Inn.
Donnie Yen as the no goodnik Tsao Siu-yan
This frenetic, action-packed film is a remake of King Hu's classic Dragon Inn from 1967. The original remains among the Top 10 wuxia films ever made.
Brigette Lin as the heroic Yau Mo-yan
The 1992 film was produced by Tsui Hark, so be prepared for some outrageous wirework, a plot that moves at a breakneck pace (try not to blink or you'll miss a lot), and some real black comedy. Also, the way the almost superhuman Tsao Siu-yan is defeated has to be seen to be believed.
Maggie Cheung as Jade, proprietor of the Dragon Gate Inn
I can't recommend this film enough! Super fun and entertaining!
And, as if that weren't enough:
Tsui Hark got together again with frequent collaborator Jet Li in 2011 and directed another pseudo-remake/sequel, Flying Swords of Dragon Gate.
Not as much fun as the 1992 film, but it's got Jet Freakin' Lee, so it's still worth a watch.

SUBLIME CINEMA #664 - GOODBYE DRAGON INN
A film for and about cineastes, made of a kind of slow core creeping nostalgia. It revolves around a single night in a cinema which is about to shut down for good, drawing all shades of nocturnal humanity for a midnight, final showing.
Atmospheric and beautiful pic from Ming-Liang Tsai, shot I believe in Taipei.
