So um I’ve thought into this and I guess I just need to spill (feel free to delete)

I’ve noticed that Joe’s crest has a lot of translations and I always felt like none of them really fit? To use two examples that come to kind. When he (almost) sacrifices himself to save T.K. and unlocks Gomamon’s ultimate and the whole Cody lying incident (sorry I’m using the English names, I’ve watched most of adventure subbed but not 02).

Reliability is used in the dub and that works for the first but not the second

Honesty is used in the official sub and that (ironically) works for the second but not the first

And I’m not sure where anyone got faith

So I propose….Integrity.

It means doing the right thing no matter what and I think it comes the closest to the Japanese word (I’m not fluent hence why I’m sending this to you to get a second opinion ^^;)

It works for the first incident because he made a promise and even if it means he’s gonna drown he’s gonna keep it because it’s the right thing to do.

And it works for the second because morality is complicated and sometimes doing the right thing (getting Joe to come help) involves doing the wrong thing (lying).

Translation is a very complicated art form that involves a lot more complexities than simply happening to know Japanese, so this is the kind of question that may be better brought up to the experienced translators in this fanbase, but I like the idea! The two kanji in the word mean "fidelity" and "truth", so basically anything that encapsulates those nuances should ideally work.

"Faith(fulness)" actually happens to be an official translation; it's from the official soundtrack writing it this way in English for Jou's theme. I think it's meant to be "faith" in the sense of "good faith", meaning Jou is a person who acts in good honor and that people can put good faith in it, but the drawbacks are that it being "reversed" (which arguably might actually be a similar issue with "reliability", in that it focuses more on others' reaction to the Crest holder than it does on the Crest holder's own good moral character) make it a bit confusing, and that people might associate it with religious faith instead of faithfulness.

I believe I sent an ask similar to this about a month ago, I'm not sure if it got lost or buried or answered so I apologize if this is a repeat ask but my question is, it's implied that Sebastian was summoned because Ciel killed his twin ("the power you gain by sacrificing me") so if Real Ciel is still alive what does that mean for the contract. I mean I don't think Ciel nor Sebastian want to back out of the contract but it does call it into question.

I’m sorry if your ask got lost somewhere. I remember replying to another ask about that topic (here). But in case I haven’t answered you I probably haven’t gotten it (because I usually answer to every message). Tumblr is sometimes eating messages. ^^

Some think that Sebastian ate the twin’s soul and that’s what made the contract possible. As I’ve explained in my answer in the link I’ve given you I always interpreted Sebastian’s words in that scene differently. And since Sebastian is a starving demon I’m not so sure if he really ate the twin’s soul back then.

But assuming that he did and that this is what made the contract with our Ciel possible, I don’t think it would affect the contract now. Because then Sebastian would have eaten the soul already, so the price has been paid, that won’t change. ;) The twin who has returned now probably doesn’t have a soul anymore.

And if the twin’s death triggered Sebastian’s summoning I don’t think that would affect the contract, either. Because the result is that Sebastian appeared before our Ciel and they agreed on the contract. The circumstances under which the demon first appeared don’t really play a role for the contract now -- or that’s what I think. 

So I wouldn’t worry too much about the contract. ;)

Um do you have any posts about how to write a Romani character? I mean I don’t plan on doing it anytime soon cause I feel I would mess it up somehow, I’m just genuinely curious about how to do and make it feel genuine.

@rrojasandribbons has a good post on the subject, though both she and I (and most Rrumblr folks, I’m pretty sure) emphasize that generally, the first step is DON’T, for the reasons outlined in my post. ESPECIALLY if it’s a solo project. If you’re co-authoring something with a Rromani writer, those tend to turn out much better. Theoretically, I suppose someone with enough research and beta readers and a community network and functional empathy/common sense could craft a decent Rromani character on their own, but I have never seen this done. Like...fucking Snatch of all things is probably the closest, and that’s purely because it comes off that Guy Ritchie, despite making a horrifically racist, voyeuristic, exploitative clusterfuck of a movie, may have at least spoken to a Romanichal or Pavee person at the bus stop a few times in his life. When, “d’ye lak degs?” is the closest sign of community involvement in a gadje project, that’s a bad fucking sign.

But if you are going to pursue writing a Rromani character, I would advise, A) taking on a Rromani co-writer and multiple beta-readers, B) avoiding genres and occupations with negative connotations for us (rule of thumb is, if you’ve seen it before, don’t do it, because not only is it boring, it’s almost certainly racist as well), and C) WRITE PEOPLE. I don’t think a gadje writer really can capture Rromanipen, so honestly, stay away from questions of identity/colorism/traditions/deeply-held cultural mores. You can certainly learn about these things and use them to inform the character, but avoid the urge the pontificate. You, as an outsider, simply cannot write about what it is to Be Rromani. Hell, it’s hard enough for an insider to define that. So make a character first and a Rrom second. This will, obviously, not be a perfect representation, and it is disappointing for me as a reader to see Rromani characters whose identity is an afterthought. But it’s better than the alternative. I would rather see gadje write a well-developed, non-stereotypical Rrom whose cultural ties are a little in the background than have incorrect information and backwards, racist portrayals perpetuated.
