Day 9: Favorite City? I've got three options here: Riverwood, Whiterun or Dragons Bridge. I honestly can't decide!

Ljubljana, Slovenia: Yes it's a real place!

I only got to stay for a day in Ljubljana between Bled and going to Italy BUT I think it was totally worth a pit stop. Ljubljana [El-lube-E-awn-a.. if you say that.. you'll be close enough haha], is the capital of Slovenia.  It's brightly colored, cafes and shops run along the river and the city expands outward from its oldest parts (which are in that "really, really, reallyyyy" old category).  It's kind of hipster-ish.. so if you have an aversion to that sort of thing, don't say I didn't warn you!

The city has some pretty awesome bridges- The dragon's bridge was my favorite though!

  Legend has it, they wag their tales when virgins cross the bridge!

Other than bridges, the whole city just gives off a really cool vibe.  The Town Hall is even a bright pink color.. where else but Europe will you find that?

There is also a really awesome market in the city center that goes on every day.  Even worth wondering around for the free smells!  Beware of the food vendors: horse burgers are common grub, so that food cart with the pony painted on it's roof.. isn't trying to be cute :P

Side Note: The castle isn't worth visiting.  Sorry Ljubljana!  It's another gutted-out souvenir shop/restaurant "castle".. seriously wish places would stop doing that haha.

Tivoli Park-is the largest park in the city, and while I was there there was an outdoor photography exhibit on the Carnival Masks/Rituals throughout the towns and villages of Slovenia.  It took the photographer a decade to do, and I quite enjoyed strolling through the pictures.

I really enjoyed the hostel I stayed in, as well.  It is slightly outside of the city center (but I kid you not.. this city is so little- you can walk it all in a few hours!). And it might not be in the nicest neighborhood.. BUT what it lacks in location it definitely makes up for in atmosphere. 

Hostel Celica is a renovated prison.. yes a renovated prison.  The majority of the rooms are actually "cells" and still have bars on the windows.  It's brightly colored and has an art gallery and a fully functioning restaurant/bar in it's lower level.  The top is a 12 person dorm with slanted ceilings and a tree-house feel to it (everyone hung their stuff on the rafters haha).  At night a local vocalist was singing in the bar- which was offering free food (all the chicken kebabs, gelato and wine you could grab!).  All of which was free- throw in free WiFi & this place gets an A+ from me.

Pretty cool, right?  The place fills up early though- so book ahead!

Final Impressions: Ljubljana- like everywhere I encountered in Slovenia, is full of really bright and welcoming people.  It's colorful and chalk-full of history, culture and things to do/see.  And if you get bored of doing touristy things.. there is shopping galore: from fresh produce to designer boutiques all tucked away behind brightly colored buildings.  If you do happen to go to Ljubljana- check out the cast-iron door on St. Nicholas' Cathedral.. it's pretty unique ;)
