Recently been using my Sims 4 character portraits to sketch out some more accurate versions of my Lantern's Light cast— as accurate as I think my Sims are, it's nice to see them completely as envisioned.
From top to bottom: Cordelia, Sìleas, Adelaide, and Monroe, all she/her.
Though my characters have draconic representations and lore on Flight Rising, the current state of my "lore" is entirely disconnected from FR and takes place in an original setting known as RED DEATH — THE ADDER, or "RDTA" for short.
I will be making gradual efforts to fully distance my work from FR. Currently, I am working on a novel within this setting, specifically centered around Lantern's Light.
However, I am still always open to questions about my writing, the worldbuilding, and the characters within!
More information will be added to this post as it becomes relevant, and as I update my tagging system.
In Lantern's Light, there's truly only one place which assures refuge to the most desperate and distraught of the city's inhabitants. It comes in the form of The Underground, a smoking parlor and "house of langour" operated by the enigmatic Madam Velvet. With a single pact, she can promise any wayward souls eternal care and escape within the saving embrace of her den.
Some quick busts I made a while ago for Johannes, Epiphany, and Monroe!
Johannes' design is originally by @spongyspingy-rising, and I also used it to influence Monroe's design :) Lore under the cut!
Johannes was always first to suffer, last to finish, a scrawny boy so harshly tormented by the bandits that stole him that he grew into a scrawny man keen to keep his head down and, against all odds, endure. Even as the resentment in his heart grew, echoed by the calls for rebellion in the washed-out sewers that lay Underfoot of Lantern's Light, he kept himself alive by keeping himself useful- and there's nothing a pair of future kings valued more than a subject so ruthlessly, loyally useful. When the new ruling court of those black market bandits came into power, they called upon Johannes to bear the title of Knight Commander, finally granting him the voice and respect so well-earned for his life of pure endurance, and the comfortable position he's proudly held ever since.
Epiphany was a wretched angel, mind ever haunted by a want for something more, a want so horribly distracting that they found themself chided, chastised at every turn for straying from the righteous path. But all paths, however dark, lead somewhere, and Epiphany's curiosity led them to the archdemon Velvet's den of langour, and her promises of a world free from the choking bonds of a life spent hunting her kind. Promising their immortal soul to the archdemon, they gracefully endured the corruption of becoming a fallen angel, and were assigned to carry Velvet's vision Underfoot. It seemed just as quickly that the violent throes of a rebellion overtook the region, and Epiphany was forced back into the embrace of Velvet's den- especially since they now had to grovel for her forgiveness with an egg in tow.
Monroe was born under Velvet's distant supervision, as the archdemon swiftly used her influence to integrate the half-angel and her parent into the aristocracy of Lantern's Light- at least until the child was grown, and Velvet would call upon Epiphany again. Monroe came to know the world from both halves of her lineage; the occult half from her parent and the demonic pantheon they served, and the mundane half from her education and peers. Still, time would only tighten the expectations Velvet felt she was owed for the pity she took upon the fallen angel, and soon the small family was forced back into the cold stone walls Underfoot. Only then did Epiphany realize that Monroe's father had not only survived, but thrived to become the area's Knight Commander. They instructed Monroe to keep the fact silent as she trained to become a knight, and promised to do all in their power to ensure the safety in making such a revelation when the time was right.
For the first time, even after all of his triumphs, Johannes feels as if he has the chance to leave behind a legacy based almost solely upon his own choice, and has gladly taken Monroe under his (somehow, despite everything, paternal) wing to ensure her success. As Epiphany carefully watches from the distance, they've begun to bask in the sweet pull of freedom once again, though they can't help but question why it feels so similar to their yearning as a righteous angel so, so long ago. After all, though Velvet has yet to call for a favor all that dramatic, an archdemon's silence should not be taken as solace...
For all those one might encounter in Lantern's Light, made selfish through either greed or necessity, Marfikent provides a welcome change. Though perhaps not as street savvy as some other locals, he's always happy to help out where he can, even if his help often requires introducing one to the city's welcoming nightlife (or, at least, whatever one could call such a wonderful flurry of expression in a city plagued by eternal night).
There, one is more likely to encounter the elegant and esteemed Ms. Eta Centauri, who- despite the carefully painted porcelain masks she wears more often than not- is anything but a silent companion. Sharp, outspoken, and with a ravenous mind, there's always a recognizable degree of awareness behind all that fun she seems to have. Catch the drag queen at the right moment, and she'll gladly engage in a riveting discussion over the politics across the city sects- catch her at the wrong moment, and she'll assure you that you simply must talk later.
Those who know better know that there's no one or the other when it comes to Marfikent or Eta- the dragon's passion is clearly no performance, dressed up or dressed down. But if it weren't for the way Marfikent so openly embraced herself, it may be a bit more obvious that the main bulk of Lantern's Light he now calls his home... hasn't always been that. After all, he has quite a lot to say about those out-of-touch aristocrats in Luminance, and certainly seems to know more about the area than most...
