Dragons in Space(2)
Kaz leaned back against the safety belts exhausted. They were coming back from their final deployment. At least that’s what the official paperwork said.
As a splice raised in a lab he didn’t have a planet of origin to return to. The DNA that formed his drakonic half came from a planet off the beaten path in the 67th district, so that’s where the army had decreed he would be sent for his retirement.
To him it seemed like just another deployment in a long series of deployments. His three mates that were still alive and with him to witness this long awaited occasion were split on the issue. Chug wasn't thrilled they were being dumped the second they had served their purpose, he loved the army wanted to stay even though they had passed the ‘best before’ date for most splice species. Bats and Tat were elated to see this ‘home’ planet of theirs, had been info gathering on it since they had been notified of their imminent retirement.
Kaz supposed that it wasn't the concept of retirement that incensed him, but rather the fact that he and his soldier brothers had been discarded on a backwoods planet and expected to be grateful after more than fifty years of service.
By all appearances, they were still in their prime, strong and young, not aging like their human counterparts. But splices weren't trusted to follow natural biological aging patterns. There were certain special splices that wouldn't seem to age for decades and then suddenly they would hit a bioengineering wall and unravel in only a few years. Hence the expiration date on their service.
They were a young splice species yet, no indication of age unraveling, at least not in their decade of creation. The kinks had seemingly been worked out in the early days of their species, and even since his own birth in the lab, tinkering with the draconic splice seemed to have plateaued.
He was working to resign himself, they were here and this was where they would stay for however many more years their DNA continued to work.
They set down on the landing pad at the science base. It was equipped with basic security but this was probably the only military grade vessel that had visited this planet in years.
The human population of the planet stayed close to the equator where the weather was gorgeous and mild all year around. Splices lived mostly to the north, their draconic blood running a bit hotter than the average human.
They stepped out onto the warm tar, squinting in the morning sunshine, barracks bags slung across their shoulders. After the planet cities on the main trade routes the collection of buildings in the distance seemed incredibly small.
It was beautiful, that was inarguable. Cliffs and plateaus punctuated the landscape, Green vines crawling up cliff faces, and rich green vegetation covered the ground in the valleys between.
Kaz turned to face a scruffy aging scientist hurrying across the tarmac to meet them. He sighed, and did his best to shove his frustration, and exasperation to the side. He had been raised equal parts in a lab and by the army, he wasn't in a hurry to go back to said childhood.
The scientists that had raised him had undoubtedly had his best interests at heart, but for research reasons. He was more than tired of being a simple research project. At least as a soldier he was valued for what he did and his skill not just for the space he occupied and how he occupied it.
“Greetings, greetings” crowed the balding scientist. Age spots dotted his skin and crows feet spread generously on either side of his face when he grinned at them. “We have rooms prepared for you, come rest yourselves.” he motioned them toward the labs off to the side of the tarmac.
The buildings had been built in the square stacked style of populated cities, but the walls that were not large windows were made of a red stone that had vegetation taking over every place the greenery could find purchase to crawl. Some of it bloomed with gorgeous vibrant colours that looked like they must be carefully tended.
The scientist was chattering happily about how pleased he was regarding their arrival, mindless trivialities that Kaz didn't bother to engage in. Except when an offhand comment about the resident splices was made.
“Are there truly no splices that reside at the labs here?” he cut the man off mid sentence. Bats and Tat were drinking everything up, but Chug had glanced back to their arrival ship twice now, as if worried that they would leave early and he wouldn't have one more opportunity to argue his case.
“Our funding for growing splices was revoked almost ten years ago, since then this has been turned into a monitoring lab. We offer medical assistance and testing of all kinds to the Drakonic splices.”
“There are hatchlings here then?” he pressed.
“No” the old man shook his head “Hatchlings are handed off to the nest best equipped to care for them when they reach the age that they can toddle about.” he was quite pleased by this fact it was clear, proud as any grandparent would be. Kaz himself was somewhat shocked and he exchanged looks with Bats and Tat eyebrows raised.
He hadn't been aware. In all the carefully packaged information the army had had on his species and its origin that the culture of the species was so well developed. Handing off the younglings at such a young age was something he wasn't aware happened with tube babies.
For the first time since he had received his discharge papers he was curious. He wanted to see what he was, what he would be if the army hadn’t been the tool that had beaten him into the weapon he was today.
He had spent his whole life learning how to toe the human line, this was his first notion that perhaps the part of him that relished the wild and violence would find a place to flourish here.
Even Chug seemed to have taken pause, turning to face the human that led them on, and quit glancing back at the refuelling ship.

Want a art like this!? My commissions are open! Message me for more information A commission for Drakonic on discord of his character Hunter the saberetooth tiger. I had a lot fun drawing out Hunter since I don't draw beefy boys enough, it was a nice change of pace, and it was interesting make a buff feral as well. I'm also really happy with Hunter's medallion, it was bit of a challenge but I really like the final result! Enjoy! Art drawn by Me Art, and Hunter belong to Drakonic
