One of the messages I take away from Letter is that you can't always fix someone's problems but you can stay by their side while they go through them.

I think that's a difficult lesson for Yamato because he seems to want affection to have some kind of efficacy, as though caring about someone should produce a tangible result. But sometimes being there for someone also means accompanying them toward a door that you can't walk through for them.

That's what Gabumon does for Yamato in Letter. Gabumon can't make his anguish disappear but he can stay close. He can talk to him when Yamato wants silence keeping him from completely retreating into himself, step away when necessary so he doesn't attract attention, come back, watch him, listen to him, confront him when his perception of himself starts becoming distorted, and be happy when he finally finds an answer. Gabumon doesn't solve Yamato's problem but stays by his side while Yamato finds the answer himself.

Taichi noticed that Yamato was absent, called him, and without pressuring him to talk, let him know that he was there for him while respecting his boundaries. Gabumon, on the other hand, stayed by his side. Taichi knocked on the door, while Gabumon stayed beside it.

Even though Yamato didn't remain by the girl's side, he gave her something of his own that could stay with her and help her find the courage to walk through that door herself.

Maybe Gabumon showed Yamato a way of caring that we later see reflected, in part, in how he relates to Taichi, Takeru and Sora in Tri. Yamato doesn't always know what to do when the people he cares about are struggling but he seems to have learned that he can always stay by their side.
