Andrew immediately knows something is wrong when he wakes to the wild beating of a heart that is not his.
The fact that the heart in his chest does not belong to him is, in fact, his only comfort as he looks around and realizes that he doesn't recognize anything -- and more importantly, anyone.
He rubs his hand over his good eye. If he knows he's hallucinating, surely he can make it stop by himself. There's no need to bother Thomas with something that clearly isn't real.
But- where is Thomas?
Andrew's chest begins to heave, and he's not sure if it's his lungs drawing breath or the vines squirming under his skin, but the effect makes him dizzy all the same. The heart beats faster. Andrew can't tell if it's reacting to his anxiety or an unseen Thomas's.
…Would Thomas's heart continue to beat if Thomas was dead?
The last story he'd written enters his mind like a bolt of electricity -- the one where the prince turned into a monster and devoured the October-boy. Suddenly, Andrew can't wait for the illusion to fade and surges to his feet, filled with adrenaline.
"Thomas?" He calls, desperate for the other boy's voice to break through his delusions and remind him that this isn't real.
"Thomas?!" When he doesn't hear Thomas's voice by his side, he calls more desperately, his mind screaming, 'No, it wasn't supposed to come true. Not like this.' His eyes begin to water.
"THOMAS?!"
