The day had gone by rather easily. Each assignment due had been previously completed correctly and turned in. The school day wasn't over yet, of course. She was only in music class, her fingers carefully tightening the hairs of her bow. She was even more carefully as she applied the rosin. Touching the hairs at all could cause them to get oily, lose grip. However, Rose's movements were confident and fluid and she lifted the violin to her shoulder, daintily resting her chin on the guard.
The first strokes were nearly tentative as the hairs slid over the strings. She would lower it only a few moments later, finely adjusting the strings into tune. It was an important part of music, at least hers. After a few moments she was thoroughly satisfied with the state of her strings. She finished just in time for the teacher to begin speaking, all students and instruments falling silent.
"Hello!" The teachers voice rang through the silent room. Rightfully so, as the room was designed specifically for music and sound. The acoustics carried the professors voice as they took attendance. "Today we have a project for you all!" Rose looked up from her desk, violet gaze skirting around the room before settling on the professor as they posted a sheet of paper on the board. "You'll each be working with a student from the drama class to compose a piece of music for their upcoming production. The best compositions will be chosen to play, so please try your hardest. Your partner's name is listed here beside your own." They stepped away, gesturing for the students to come find their partner. Some rushed to the board, some raised their hands to ask questions.
Rose carefully set her violin and bow on her desk as the teacher answered questions from her classmates before explaining that they would meet in the theater after everyone knew their partner. Kanaya Maryam. The name sounded vaguely familiar. Porrim. That was it. Rose's sister was acquainted with who Rose could only guess be Kanaya's sibling.
She walked with the class to the theater, violin case slung over her shoulder and both violin and bow held carefully in her hands. She entered silently, absent from the chatter that encased many of the students as they raced to find their partner. As the room settled down she watched, looking for those still unmatched. There were few still without their partner. It was easy to rule out those in her class, and then again the males. She was left with two students, one whom she was vaguely acquainted with. The other would certainly have to be-
"Miss Maryam, I presume?" Rose's dark painted lips poised into a smile as she approached the girl. She was far taller than Rose. "I am Rose Lalonde. I believe we've been partnered together?" She shifted the position of her bow, balancing it over the violin she held rested on her shoulder to offer her hand. "It's my pleasure to meet you."
