how did you handle that corpse situation?! that sounds traumatic @__@
VERY CAREFULLY
i mean, as a camp, the ultimate plan was that we got everyone at our emergency meeting spot immediately, got everyone the hell away from the pond while the corpse was dealt with by, like, professionals, and from there tried to resume the camp day as best we could? just. y’know, away from the pond. the priority was just. taking care of the kids and keeping things from getting overblown for them--so throughout the day kids were separated by age group and had the situation explained to them; the oldest teenagers got a full but gently-put “someone unaffiliated with the camp was found dead in the pond but it happened outside of camp hours” and the youngest kids got “it didn’t happen during camp and it wasn’t anyone from camp but someone got hurt in the pond BUT WE’RE GOING TO THE BEACH TOMORROOOOWWWW!!!!!”
yeah so the next day we did our usual morning assembly at the waterfront because we always do and it was important to normalize the pond for the kids again, but then we did a beach field trip, and went back to camp the next day and just...continued as normal
the staff all got a meeting about everything at the end of the day but like. for me personally and i think plenty of the other staffers it was a matter of, the kids and needing to take care of the kids kept me busy enough that i couldn’t really worry too much about anything else?
BUT YEAH IT WAS. IT WAS A DAY
