Explaining mistakes in someone’s drawing or a small tale about consistency

You may remember I’ve recently posted this sketch:

It was in fact a re-sketch in attempt to explain mistakes the original work-in-progress drawing by Comfy has. It looked like this:

After that I’ve posted the simple eye tutorial, and Comfy has managed to finish his improved version... You already can see where this was going, right?

So the drawing in fact didn’t improve much. Aside the obvious persistent mistakes in anatomy, I asked Comfy why he insisted on stretching pony this way, and he replied - “She’s supposed to be tall.”

Well, after that I’ve tried to do another analysis, but this time taking the “tall” into account...

Here you can clearly see the technique I’m using. The mane, although looking more or less decent in the original picture, simply didn’t work properly in terms of aesthetics, hence I’ve extended it all down to the chest - it looks satisfying now.

The legs are supposed to have roughly the same sizes on both front and hinder counterparts. The alignment lines at the bottom are supposed to help grasping the placement rules for the legs.

The head and the chest, however, are not supposed to have the same size! Chest is always smaller (at least 3/4 of the head’s size).

And yet, Comfy still couldn’t grasp the shape of the eye hidden behind the muzzle, so I’ve continued...

...and drew this breakdown, further explaining the “anatomy” and the techniques. You can notice that unlike the classic ponies, mine are more close to dogs or felines, due to absence of the obese ribcage and the belly - this pony is very slim and fit.

The red circle doesn’t overlap with the green one - another part which confused Comfy. This is done in order to properly set up shape of the back and the plot, and also to make the pony look slightly wider.

The shape of the top part of hind leg is in fact oval, which goes lower than the red circle. This helps to support the proper shape, and drawing it over the red circle would be a mistake (which I was also guilty of in the past).

P.S. The person in question actually wants to improve, and I drew these re-sketches and breakdowns to help him. The quote on the top is an obvious irony.

How I draw da pones. A step by step thingamajig!

So since this is kinda long I put it all under a read more. It's more like a step by step of how I draw ponies. Remember that this is not the way to draw ponies just my way.

Also added some commentary to make it less boring

And here we go...

A circle! This will be the head

Two lines for the neck. The pony is facing the left so the lines bend accordingly. (it's kinda like a 3/4th view)

Another circle, this is the chest area.... also it looks like a funky mushroom... AND NOTHING ELSE pervs

Little bean body. (I'll try and do another step by step thingy where I show this from a sideview at another time)

ADD A LEG! It starts near the top of the chest circle and then goes down into a hoof... I really don't know a good way to explains this

put one foot in front of the other~~~~ Soon you'll be walking out that dooooooOOOR!!!

Little oval at the butt for the flank

Then kinda like the front legs but a bit to the side of the flank...like... GAH I DON'T KNOW HOW TO EXPLAIN THINGS AFGHTJ

ANYWAY, add that other leg and put a little cross on the face for the eye placement and to tell us what way this ponies head is going

Lower the opacity of the sketch and make a more finalized sketch of the body

ZOOM IN FOR FACE ADFGTH

Make out the shape of the head with the cheeks and the defined chin and blah blah. Then define the muzzle and eyes a bit

Note that if this was Mare Sombra I'd be drawing the head a bit more edgier because shes so FREAKING EDGY

*ahem* Add some ears. I myself like to make them fat and plump but everyone likes to draw 'em differently.

Add eyes so it doesn't look like it will devour your soul as well as some detail to the nose. Oh and a mouth too

Oh and for unicorns/pegasai/alicorns

I have a love hate relationship with pegasai... WINGS ARE HARD OKAY

Anyways, accessorize and your done!

EDIT: After the sketch is when I check for mistakes and correct them in the lineart phase (for example the fact that the front leg in the foreground is smaller than the one in the background) Thanks so much for pointing that out Lordsheogorath

So make sure to do a good look over before working on lineart! Cause we all make mistakes :D
