How are you doing? Penple!
Are you rounding off the year meaningfully?
For today, Ihave a story about the Nov 29th PEN.UPDAY held at the Galaxy Zone of COEX in Samsung-dong, Seoul.
Now, let’s dive into the event, where the participants’ eyes were shining brightly more than ever!
#1. Preparation For The Event
Before opening the event, PEN.UP Team was very busy giving finishing touches to greet all of you. We couldn’t stop thinking how we could make the event more interesting. We seem to have made a lot of preparation, but there was still something we should have done.
This is the Galaxy Zone, the venue of today’s event, PENUPDAY.
We have prepared refreshments and postcards which were made with wonderful works by Kim Minsoo, the host of today’s lecture.
Once the preparation was over, the participants started to arrive. Many picture lovers visited this PEN.UPDAY as ever. Even those who came for shopping at COEX gathered after seeing the artists lecturing.
#2. Opening – Introduction to PEN.UP DAY and artists(Greetings)
There was an introduction to PEN.UP, which was followed by presenting lecture’s theme and lecturers. For those who didn’t know PENUP very well, we showed various artworks uploaded onto PEN.UP as well as introducing challenges, HOF, and exhibits, etc.
And there was an introduction to the main character of today’s lecture series, artist @miyune, which was followed by a discussion on the themes of mobile drawing lectures.
The topic was “Drawing objects around us using Galaxy Note 4”. Initially, it seemed unfamiliar and difficult, but once the lecture had started, the participants showed an incredible concentration on the lecture, which was much more interesting than they might have thought.
#3. Mobile Drawing Lecture by artist “miyune”
-Today’s lecturer miyune.
He pointed out that the most important thing in finding character elements from objects is observant eyes and creativeness. Miyune said he pays a close attention to the appearances of objects. His imagination comes from them. Once various faces he found in objects were shown, laughter was heard here and there.
Isn’t it funny? :-)
With the objects we pass by daily plus his own imagination, that’s the moment when his talent is shining.
#4. Do-It-Yourself Time!
After learning from the lecturer how to get an inspiration from objects, Participantshad a time to draw on their own using Galaxy Note 4.
Participants asked questions of the artist, and then he gave various tips for mobile digital drawing individually.
An old couple, who were already using Galaxy Note, but never used digital drawing before, immersed themselves in drawing with the artist’s polite explanation.
Some were still not familiar with drawing, but everybody was pleased and enjoyed drawing. Every individual piece was funny and unique.
#5. Now register for PENUP, and upload
Those who met PEN.UP for the first time were every surprised, by many picture lovers from around the world, and lots of wonderful pictures. And by the fact that all these pictures are digital drawings.
It is really interesting that picture lovers can become PEN.UP friends. From now on, PENUP will find picture lovers and introduce PEN.UP to them, Help them to draw interesting pictures more easily.
We would like to thank miyune for his well-prepared and sincere lecture. His lecture will be uploaded onto the blog for PENple. You can look forward to it!

It's already October.
Where PEN.UP manager lives, there is high, blue sky with a nice breeze.
It means autumn is just around the corner.
Since October is here, I guess we should listen to the October hall of famer, dalistylin's interview?
Dalistylin's works immediately catches the eye. It's because the atmosphere of the drawings are quite unique.
It's pretty with its multi colors but sometimes, dark and gloomy.
Although there are other drawings with various atmosphere, a PENple can tell quickly it's dalistylin's work due to its strong individuality. The mystique of the drawing got PEN.UP manager curious.
What kind of person is this?
PEN.UP = P dalistylin = D
P> 1. PEN.UP's popular artist; what is he like in daily life?
Please introduce yourself. Your name and where you live. And if it's not rude, can we ask your occupation?
D> Hello, my name is Punit and I live in Ohio, USA with my wife and three children (3 ½ year-old twins and a 21 month-old). I work as a physician, so I love all things science and medicine, but also have a passion for art.
P> 2. How did you start PEN.UP?
D> I started using PEN.UP after I upgraded my phone to the Note 3. I saw the app was pre-loaded, but didn't know what it was for, so it went unused for about a month until I decided to see what is actually was! When I first used it, I was very impressed by the quality of the artwork and how kind everyone was. I think it's the perfect SNS for artists or those who appreciate art. I'm not very active in other SNS sites, but PEN.UP really drew me in.
P> 3. Please explain the meaning of your nickname?
D> I can't remember exactly why I even chose this name, except that I needed to come up with a login for some website 6 or 7 years ago where all the names I initially tried were taken. One of my favorite artists is Salvador Dali (his uncanny technical abilities coupled with his limitless creativity never ceases to amaze me), so the "dali" part comes from that. The "stylin’" part was the first thing that came to mind at the time, even though my style is nothing like Dali's (I could only dream that). I wish I had a better thought-out username, but it's stuck.
P> 4. I just assumed that your drawing was your occupation. So I was surprised to find out that you were not an artist. How long have you liked drawing and when did you start?
D> I think I've always loved to draw and doodle, at least since childhood. I remember constantly doodling during grade school and middle school, mainly superheroes and cartoon characters. My high school art teacher taught me a lot and I think my skill developed significantly around that time, though subsequent schooling, career, and parenthood mostly put a pause on art for me. Nonetheless, I continued to fill up sketchbooks with many unfinished and cluttered drawings. It is only recently, thanks to PEN.UP, that my love of art has been rekindled.
P> 5. At first I thought your drawings were woodprinting. It was because the engraving and embossing were incredible. There are many hand drawing dessin and water colors as well. Do you enjoy other forms of art apart from digital drawing?
D> I am relatively new to digital art, so most of my drawings/paintings have been in traditional media like pen & ink, pencil, linoleum cuts, acrylic, watercolor, and oil paint. I still enjoy these non-digital media, but have found it difficult to summon the energy to set up the tools and materials necessary, designate proper time for an "art session," and clean up afterwards, such that I would often make excuses to create anything other than doodles and unfinished drawings with pens in my sketchbook. In fact, I don't think I've touched a paint brush in over 5 years for these reasons.
P> 6. Are there any significance in transferring to digital what seemed only possible for analogue?
D> I think digital has significantly opened up the realm of potentials with art, above and beyond what is readily possible with analogue media. Having features like layers, blending options, zoom, and being able to quickly switch brush types and colors, makes it much easier to materialize the image in your mind. Most helpful for me are the simple eraser and "undo" features, which has made it easier to experiment with a drawing while not worrying about "messing up."
There are still features of digital which do not capture the full nature of analogue, like the tactile feedback of dragging a pen/pencil on paper or paintbrush on canvas, or the subtle changes to line weight or color that occur with analogue media. However, I think that the pressure-sensitive nature of the Note stylus has really helped provide a close approximation of the precision and tactile feel of pen or brush, and software is advancing in replicating the subtleties of analogue. I am in awe of the many artists on PEN.UP who have wonderfully captured the beauty of analog art with digital media. I still feel like a novice in this regard, but I’ve found it enjoyable trying to replicate the linoleum cut/woodprinting technique in digital form. It’s also been fun to combine analogue and digital to create “hybrid” drawings, which I’ve done a few times by digitally “finishing” many incomplete sketchbook doodles or canvas paintings.
From a convenience standpoint, having the Note phone has made me more productive in making art. I no longer have to worry about spilling ink or paint on the floor or spending time cleaning up brushes--all I have to do is whip out my phone and I can start working on a project within seconds, regardless of where I am.
P> 7. You have such peaceful smile in your profile drawing. But the human loneliness and depression is particularly expressed in the figure drawings. Anyone could feel it but it's very rare for it to be discerned and expressed. Please tell us a reason why you take such interest in this.
D> Like music, writing, dancing, or any other form of art, I think drawing is a powerful tool to convey emotion. Many of my works are emotionally bland--just images that I draw which I hope are esthetically pleasing in one way or another--however, some of them do depict sadness, loneliness, or a few happiness. I consider myself to be a generally happy person (I do not necessarily feel the same emotions that are being depicted in my drawing), but find the process of making these emotional pieces to be cathartic.
P> 8. It's an official question always asked at HOF. Which artist inspires you ? What is your muze?
D> Prior to joining PEN.UP, my primary inspirations were the great Old Masters of art (too many to name, but artists like Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Caravaggio, Dürer, Pontormo, etc.). I am impressed by their disciplined study of light & shadow, anatomy, color, and draftsmanship. One can learn a lot about the foundations of art by studying their works. Since joining PEN.UP, I have been inspired by the other artists on the site.
I have been so impressed with the level of talent in this community and the diverse possibilities that artists have demonstrated with the digital medium. Seeing what others are capable of producing has pushed me to improve myself.
P> 9. How has PEN.UP influenced you since you started it ?
Please share with us your thoughts for a better PEN.UP community.
D> As I noted above, PEN.UP has really revived art in my life. I had fallen out of the regular practice of drawing and I think that circuit of my brain was slowly fading away from disuse. Now it's part of my life again and I am happier for it. I learn so much from seeing the works of other artists on PEN.UP, who delight me with a steady stream of high quality art every time I check my feed.
I don't have any particular ideas for how to make PEN.UP any better--I'm happy with how it is and it seems to improve with every update.
P> 10. Please say a word to the PENples( you can video tape it too)
D> Thank you PEN.UP for creating such a great community. Thanks of course to all the great members for making PEN.UP what it is. It's so nice to have met so many friends from all over the world. I am humbled to be in the Hall of Fame, especially when there are so many talented artists who I think are more deserving. Thank you, PEN.UP artists, for being a source of continual inspiration and for being so kind. I hope to keep making drawings that others enjoy viewing.
Thanks for your kind answers, dalistylin!
We will look forward to seeing more activity from you.
Your works will come to the light through PEN.UP and they will inspire many to also dream of becoming artists.
And that dream will come true through PEN.UP.

We've had more participants during our September challenge.
Our PENples really enjoy drawing faces. And they are full of wit.
Sam and RoLLyRobot expressing with their representing characters were popular as usual. RoLLyRobot taking a selfie in front of a mirror is quite cute.
There were many comical selfies as well. The expression on zooclankoala reminds me of the king of comedy, jack black.
Uzu's selfie of expressing his messy hair to look like a bird's nest is fun too. In Korea we describe a bed head by saying "bird nested on top of your head"
BacGyver, NYS-ART uploaded a selfie that looks like an actor's profile picture.
There are some PENples that drew themselves as a main character fr a movie.
We were amazed by the October's HOF, kiana_leilani's water color, colored pencil self portrait. Her self portrait seemed to tell us so many stories of a main character of a novel.
Lono's sensual self portrait captured my heart. The sophisticated pieces were like movie posters.
PENples express themselves through drawing.
PEN.UP is where passion, love, laughter, ambition and grief among other things around us are reborn and shared.
Bring out the sleeping artist inside of you and bring out the hidden pieces from our smartphones.
P.s. Many PENples drew their lovely wives, children and friend's portraits. We are challenging many to participate this month's challenge to draw loved ones. Please draw someone special around you.

The PEN.UP Team
The second PEN.UP day was at Seoul SangAm-Dong past Sunday.
The meeting for this PEN.UP DAY was at the DMCC building's Evanstone Gallery where the Korean PEN.UP artists BIG4's (kimdajeong, BacGyver , Mongpic , viva.j) exhibition was being held.
Let's hear all about the full packed PEN.UP day stories from Mongpic's lecture to the meeting up with Korean BIG4 PEN.UP artists.
The PEN.UP team arrived at the Evanstone Gallery and waited for PENples. As PENples arrived, we enjoyed the works together. Since it was the weekend, many PENples came as a family. The artists personally introduced themselves and their works to PENples. It was exciting to meet in the artists who I've met through smartphone, in person.
After having looked through the exhibition, we became more curious about Mongpic's secret of drawing.
Mongpic shared the basics of the drawing tool and it's advantages to the PENples. PEN.UP manager has learned many amazing tips from this lecture. The blending effect, ziter function to express cotton like texture and the rate function which gives an effect of smeared brush. This oil painting expression has been transferred to the screen of Samsung Galaxy note10.1. PENples exclaimed "wow"
Mongpic also introduced the water color brush function. We were all stirred up when the water color effect was materialized. After explaining about the drawing tool function, Mongpic shared his own method.
And We drew a tree with Mongpic.
As someone who thought it was important to have precise shape, Mongpic's mood drawing was refreshing for PEN.UP manager.
The wonderful tree is being completed with various colors and shades.
Although it was much easier to draw than one leaf at a time, it turned out to be a great tree.
Wow! Take a look at the tree drawing PENples completed with Galaxy Note 12.2 and s pen.
Mongpic's detailed lecture stood out on this PEN.UP day. He has prepared so many illustrations for PENples, as well as doing his best with providing detailed and easy explanations.
If you come to the PEN.IP day, you can enjoy satisfying seminars.
After a very profitable lecture by Mongpic, we moved to the Labello cafe on the first floor to chat. The time with the artist eating nacho and drinking beer was fun. We sat around the table with our favorite artists to chat and made new friends with people who like drawing.
One of the high lights were gift coupon lottery. The gifts were the t shirts with Korean PEN.UP artists' works printed and also a Casebyme coupon. Casebyme is an application which you can create your own smartphone case with a desired picture or drawing. PEN.UP is friends with Casebyme.
PEN.UP manager enjoyed meeting and spending time with all of you.
Let's meet again everyone~. We will prepare meaningful programs and gifts. We wish to meet with more PENples in person.
Until then we will meet at PEN.UP.
