Green City in Grey By Corbin Leach | November 11, 2013 (Age 20)
Trying to draw a tree based on math
More precisely, these four rules:
- the trees and branches are cylinders
- the cross section of the sum of the branches is equal to the cross section of the stem. This also holds true for the branching of the branches
- each fork has the same number of branches going out (here: 3)
- there is roughly 60° between the branches (this one I admit I struggle to follow)
You can see the fractal nature of trees here
The problem is:
Drawing trees is really hard
Too many lines and too many details
And you need to figure out what leaf is in front of the other

Tree forms by Graham Sutherland
I guess you are either fascinated by tree forms, or you’re not. If you are, you respond to a kind of personality in the shapes, twists, textures etc of an individual tree or part of a tree. The best artists bring out a sort of monumentality in these random organic forms.
Here’s an artist totally fascinated by tree forms: Graham Sutherland, who spent many hours translating the rugged vegetation of Pembrokeshire into Art.

Trees in Watercolor
Back to the watercolor class today with mixed emotions. I wonder if watercolor is even my medium? Do you ever wonder why you are trying something new. I was told the piece was very “painterly”, which was nice, but I really did not like the piece. I came home and added some pen and ink to the watercolor as it looked to bland to me. I am having a hard time figuring out how to have more dark darks…
