Eight months ago I decided to create a coloring book based on beautiful places in Montana that our family has enjoyed exploring over the past few years. I started developing an illustration style that was repeatable and a production process that was tailored for animation of these scenes. The process of drawing by hand with a rough gestural process, refining line work and compositing for a 2.5d parallax animation style was refined over several initial test projects. The look is achieved by using very similar techniques that Disney Studio created in the 1930s during the inventive “Golden Age” of animation; using modern day digital tools for finishing. Working evenings and weekends to create illustrations and share process on the website and Instagram gave feedback on how to refine the style. Within 6 months I had created over 30 illustrations and animations with this process that is repeatable with animators in my studio. We took a playful tact creating a book that encourages families to get out and explore. While there are illustrated maps and line art drawings of each location, we included a limerick poem instead of a traditional hiking or trail guide description.
