Dream I had

Made Some Horror Art/Writing of DAIHK.

This is hugely inspired by @worthytemplarnerd's dream sequence in their fanfic "What the Future brings"!

It's a theoretical "BAD ENDING" where Dewi DOES get possessed by the Radiance and goes on a killing spree.

And my idea, in turn, is the idea of what happens after Dewi wakes up after said horror.

His immune system was able to fight off whatever the hell the Radiance was after a long while. But when Dewi woke up, he went into a horrible coughing fit.

He found himself surrounded by smoking buildings, the dark abyss of a cave, a weird sticky orange puss, and... a lot of dead insects.

His first thought is why his mouth tasted so awful, like dirt and rancid meat. And that his lungs feel like they're full of water, his eyes feel like they're burning, and OWW(!!!!) his arms felt like they had one million little paper cuts all over (was that a mantis claw?). His ankle feels twisted... maybe worse.

He then realizes where he is.

Dirtmouth, the little bug town he's gotten so used to... but it's completely silent. There's not a bug in sight and the buildings are smashed to a fine dust. The cave air is so cold.

His eyes awkwardly scan the area for anyone. Ghost... or maybe Hornet? She was the easiest to spot with her red cloak. But he can't find anything. Dust fills his lungs and he can't help but keep coughing until he flops on the ground in defeated breaths. And once he's at ground level, he sees something that makes his stomach churn.

Underneath the rubble he can make out bug guts and crushed shells.

It wasn't the bug parts that really scared him though. Dewi had seen plenty of dead insects in his life. In the beaks of birds, shredded apart by their fellow insects in nature documentaries, and baked on the hot sidewalk. He had killed his fare share of mosquitos and ants. At this point he was desensitized to it. Dead insects were just... normal.

But this...

This was different. Because he recognized these ones...

These were- these were the talking ones. His friends... the ones who...

Mr. Cornifer... and... and Quirrel... and Ghost and a bright red cloak...crushed beyond recognition... and he knew, deep in the pit of his stomach, who had done this.

And after wanting to scream bloody murder, Dewi woke up.

He was too scared to go back to the cave the next morning... so he didn't go.

He brought 5 different flashlights the next time he went, which the bugs weren't very excited about, but the boy didn't really care.

...He was too scared to tell them about his dream.

The whole thing is quite gruesome thought that I was a bit iffy elaborating on because I don't like putting kids through extreme horror-esc scenarios. This one is a bit different since it's a dream sequence and NOT an actual occurrence. But yeah. This isn't cannon necessarily, but it can fit if you want it too.

How to write realistic dream sequences:

I’ve noticed that in a lot of fiction, dream sequences are usually just used as plot devices, and rarely feel like the real thing. On the other hand, I’ve also noticed that people often have a hard time describing their dreams, sometimes leaving out entire details just because they don’t know how to word them. Therefore, here are some things that happen in dreams to make your sequence more realistic, with terms for them that I’ve coined for those who just wanna explain their dreams easier:

A ‘Psuedo-Cloak’, or recognizing one thing to be another (e.g. you see a toilet, but recognize it to be a door and walk over to open it)

A ‘Skiing-Bobby’, or having an additional (nonexistent) member to your family/friend group (e.g. there’s some guy named Geoffrey that you’ve never known IRL, but in the dream, they are a welcomed member of the family)

A ‘Dream-Cameo’ or having someone you’re familiar with (like a celeb or character from a movie/tv show) appear in the dream, sometimes playing a part in it (e.g. Fonzie from happy days breaks into your house and throws your little brother out the window)

‘Intuitive-Memory’, or simply accepting something unusual to be a normal part of your life, and treating it as such (e.g. your dream-father grows mushrooms on top of your neighbour’s roofs, and you can remember him doing this since dream-childhood)

A ‘Dreamtour’ or getting (usually unwillingly) sidetracked from your dream’s main mission, and spending the remainder of the dream just trying to get back on course (e.g. the man with the moose’s head wants you to get a VCR for your grandmother, but you’ve accidentally fallen down a manhole and are now in Australia, trying to explain to the nearest police officer that you don’t live here and need the fastest plane back to Cleveland)

‘Dreamotions’ or having weird emotions about things that don’t make sense (e.g. that pigeon in the street makes you want to cry until you drown, but the slice of toast you have in your hands makes you happy enough to want to throw your life savings off a balcony like Henry Sugar)

‘Moon-falling’, or falling in slow motion as if gravity has suddenly become way weaker, kinda like on the moon (e.g. that one kinda explains itself.)

Mewsikeen has a tendency to wake me up at all hours of the night for attention with... somewhat gentle but firm taps to my face. Often ARMED taps. This does not go over well, but at least serves to inspire the occasional comic strip. THIS strip is, of course, also an homage to the groundbreaking "Little Nemo in Slumberland" by Winsor McCay. It's been a strip I've been wanting to parody for a while now, and this was a lot of fun to try. And for the VERY eagle-eyed out there who know, that background is actually referenced from a vintage photograph of the town I live in, Oil City, PA.
