Dax (Dre’s best friend with benefits that he’s trying his hardest not to fall in love with) visits at the absolute worst time. Still, things don’t turn out too bad.

Dax walks over, asks, “Dre? What’re you doing, man?” and sits next to him, legs hanging off the bed as Dre faces the opposite way to hide. “Dre?” he asks again, finally catching on, and he’s terribly gentle now. Dre hates it, he hates all of this: Christmas, his stupid mom, her rotating door of alcoholic boyfriends, and Dax, most of all, for making Dre face it all. When Dax cranes his head to get a better look at him, he turns further away so his tears don’t catch the light.
