Artist: Brian Knep Title: Drift Grid Date Created: 2005
Brian Knep is the first artist-in-residence at Harvard medical school. In the past Knep has worked as the senior software engineer on films such as Mission Impossible and Jurassic Park. His works have also been displayed in the Milwaukee Art Museum. Now, Knep works side by side with scientists exploring the connections between technology and human interaction. His works vary from microscopic sculptures to large scale interactive installations.
Knep's piece, Drift Grid, is a 7x7 interactive video installation. Together this piece uses a computer, video camera, video projections, and various software programs to interact with the viewer's gaze. This piece is composed of 16 dynamic panels. Each panel displays various shapes drifting upward. When the viewer's gaze meets a panel these shapes slow down and reverse direction (slowly move downward).
